Ford E150, O2 Sensor, which side is bank 2?

Hey Gang, a few months ago I purchased a 2004 Ford e150 for my handyman business. It occasionally throws up the check engine light, I purchased a innova scan tool, and was able to determine the codes that it had were o2 sensor related. At the time the codes were for bank 2 sensor 1, I popped open the doghouse to check them out, and was going to swap them to figure out which bank was which, but neither of the front o2 sensors were very tight. One of them was only finger tight. So I took them out and reinstalled them. They have different harness connectors by the way, so I can not swap them to determine which one is the culprit. Anyway everything was good to go for about 300 miles or soo, but threw the CEL today, it is p2197(I do not know for sure if this was the same as originally but I think it was). P2197 is o2 bank 2 sensor 1. Which one is this? And on a site like oxygensensors.com, is this considered sensor 1 or 2.
BTW, my haynes manual, has the cylinder layout, but they reference it off of the distributer. This does not work for individual coils.
Any help is much appreciated.

You don't have a K & N FIPK on it do you? They can cause it to run lean if it sucks more air than the engine can digest, and provide sufficient fuel for.

It sounds stupid, but it happened to me on an '04 Ford Crown Vic.

In typical Ford modular V8's, Drivers side is bank 2 - Passenger is bank 1 and I believe the cylinders go like this:

REAR
_4_8_
_3_7_
_2_6_
_1_5_
FRONT

O2 Sensor 1 is in front of the converters and O2 sensor 2 is behind the converters.

You rock, thanks. I am off to order a sensor. Hope that is it, they are not to bad on this vehicle (about $40 to $50) so I am going to try it and hope for the best.

generally speaking, (I haven't been proven wrong yet on this one) look at the cylinder bank that is the farthest forward in the v configuration, that is the home of the number 1 cylinder, and bank 1.

Do you have the exact code you pulled? codes can sometimes be misleading.

$40-$50 sounds like a bargain. The dealer charged $91.68 for the one on my 2001 Windstar last week. Of course, the total parts and labor was $242.44.

Tell me about it. The stealer replaced my fuel pump twice in 3k miles based upon a "bank 2 O2 sensor throwing a lean code."

When it happened the third time, they decided it was my aftermarket FIPK by K & N. FWIW - It hasn't thrown a code since converting it back to stock.

Needless to say, I have about $400 goodwill at that dealer available to me...

The code is P2197, the oxygen sensor is thru oxygensensors.com. Hopefully this will be the fix, I know that scan tools can sometime lead people down the wrong road to the problem, but at less then $50 I figure it is the logical choice.

OK, hang onto your old sensor; sometimes aftermarket can give you headaches too.

ISSUE

This article is intended to aid in diagnosing DTC's P0171, P0174, P1130, P1131, P1150, P1151, P2195, or P2197 (system lean or lack of HEGO switches) when a vacuum leak is present. HEGO sensors, MAF sensors, and PCM replacements are not an effective repair when a vacuum leak is causing the above DTC's.

ACTION

Perform the following inspections/repairs when the above codes are found in memory. Procedure provides instructions on how to make comparisons of the total fuel corrections (using scan tool or equivalent) at idle and high RPM's to help determine if a vacuum leak is the root cause of the DTC's.

Ok, from then on the TSB refers to looking for a vacuum leak- check around the PCV valve or in the PCV vacuum plumbing.

this is where a scan tool that shows data is useful- you would look for "long term fuel trim" shifting or out of specs.

Wow. A fuel pump "Could" produce a lean engine, I suppose, but I wouldn't have started there at all. and after the code came back- usually says your guess was wrong. Lean and rich codes usually go after air leaks or misfires. A vacuum leak adds un-metered air to the mix and the o2 sensor see it and eventually sets a code. you have to determine if the sensor has failed or it's telling the truth.
Baffled at what they were thinking.

The O2 sensor I had replaced last week was at 99729 miles on the odometer, but at 93709 when the CEL came on, they said it was a leaking intake manifold gasket. That time cost me over $500.

Well gang I got the sensor in and got around to installing it. I hope this takes car of it, wish me luck! How long should it take to find out, 1000 mile or so?

If you reset the CE light and it does not come on within 100 miles or so, you should be good. Also, some vehicles' ECU's go by cycles and not miles so it may take 5-10 on/off cycles of the engine with a few miles each to guarantee the problem is fixed.

That is good to know, I did reset the computer. I'll be putting that much mileage on in the next couple of days, so I guess I'll be finding out soon.
