Lariats today, the leather is heated and in most cases cooled as well. The rear slider is power as well. The power seats have more adjustment than they used to, not to mention the adjustable pedals and the tilt+telescoping steering wheel. They track the miles on your trailers for you making maintenance intervals easier to keep up with. The power door locks lock the tailgate. The power locks on today's Lariat's unlock the door for you when you take ahold of the handle to open the door. 4WD Lariats now have an automatic 4WD system that can be used all the time which can save your goose in patchy weather where full time 4WD would bind and/or wear components.

There are many major additions to newer Lariats versus the ones from 2000 that I'm not even mentioning. They have stuff now that wasn't even an idea in 2000.

To answer the question of $30k in value would need some other variables answered. Number one would be, are you talking about $30,000 at the value of dollars in 2000, or 2016/17? In today's world, it is apparently worth $30k of today's dollars or they wouldn't be selling more and more every year.

All good points. All combined they aren't worth $30K to me.

As to dollars, I'm talking dollars today. Not sure how else to talk about dollars in this situation. We have a 16 year old lightly used truck for $20K versus a new truck for $50K. I'm also sure I'm conservative on the cost of a new Super Duty Diesel Lariat. :)

I'm also glad they are selling more and more every year. This creates more and more good value used trucks every year. :)

I've had my 2015 F150 Super Crew with the 2.7L engine just over a year. It was a demo with 10k miles on it when I bought it and it's got just over 27k miles on it now. Since I didn't know for sure what service had been done, I had the oil & filter changed at 13526 miles and again at 18324 miles. It's never needed any oil added between changes, and yes you can go longer between changes than I do, but I'm just too old fashioned, I guess, and most of my driving is stop and go city driving.

As for the 2.7L engine, if I'd been buy NEW, I would not have gotten the 2.7L, but now that I have it, I'm glad I do have the 2.7L. It's got all the power and acceleration I need. It's rated for a 5,000 lb. trailer and has the hitch, although I've not yet needed to pull a trailer. And even with mostly city driving, it's overall average since I've owned it is 20.842 mpg, although if I went with just individual tanks, as many people do, it's sometimes better than 23.5 mpg.
Bird, glad to see your post. How is your health doing?Merry christmas.Frank..

Wow, I'd like to see that???

When I bought my 2012 F150 in Virginia, I started out like I usually do to buy a 2-3 year old pickup. As near as I could tell, the prices for used pickups, with 20-35k miles, was the same or maybe $2k more than a comparable 2012. I commented on that to the salesman at the dealership when I was paying for the truck. I said that did not seem right and I must be wrong. He said, nope, you are right, there is a lot of demand in this region right now and clean used trucks are expensive. Then I said, well, but who is it that is buying a 2 year old truck for the same or slightly more than a new truck? He shook his head and said, there are a lot of people who do not pay enough attention to prices.

Wow!!!! Isn't that amazing and somewhat entertaining!!!! :) Sounds like you certainly made the right choice.

In a lot of cases I see used trucks bringing more than what a new one would be.

The Ford dealer gave me a bonus of $3500 to take back my 2014 F150, six months before the (2 year) lease was up (making his acquisition cost $30,000), and then turned around and put it up for sale for $35,000, which is $2000 more than my original lease cost back in 2014!

Weird things are happening.

Huh? Canada has been in recession or barely able to stay above recession since the dollar crushed the value of the looney. Canada was able to dodge our housing crash, but now Vancouver is crashing and there may be spillover into the broader Canadian economy. A friend of mine who owns a company that does phase aircraft maintenance up in Canada disagrees but had also been telling me that the high dollar wasn't affecting his world.

I was talking about the US dollar. Compared to others, we may seem to be doing fine, but overall it is worth less and less every day.

Here are 2 examples from just this thread.

That 2001 with the 7.3 powerstroke (444e) will run forever and then some. Ford built their HD rep (that 6.0 and 6.4 almost destoyed) with that truck.

I know the old 7.3PSD will do a lot of running. Even the old 7.3 IDI would run a long time. I know a guy with a rollback that had 180k on his 7.3PSD and busted a piston in it. He tore it down and put new pistons and bearings in it and ran it to 450k and busted another piston. I'm not sure what he did to it but he fixed it and ran it another 3 or 4 years. Now he has a new or almost new F-450. I would say the 7.3 is a good engine to hold up like that in a roll back. They are lacking on power by today's standards.

My 2000 Lariatt has full leather, pwr windows, seats, etc.

Do the differences you listed have a $30,000 value??

Are you indicating the current Power Stroke is more reliable than the 7.3L offered in 2001?

All the lariat package was back in 01 was leather seats and wood grain trim. Times have changed, it is a lot more today. Like I said before a low end XLT would be nicer minus not having leather.

Buy that 2001 truck for $20k and try to make it as nice as a new lariat. You will be over the cost of a new truck. You will never be able to get a 7.3 to pull like a 6.7, especially reliably.

I would say the new engine is better than the 7.3.

If $20k is all you then a truck like that is all you can get. There is nothing wrong with that. You just can't compare it to a new $50k truck today. For $20k I would look around for a 2011 or newer F-150 with around 100k with max tow and max payload.

Thanks, you hit a lot of the points. You don't have to get a lariat to get a power rear slider, on the 150 when you get a crew cab it is automatically a power slider. XLT's have tilt, and adjustable pedals. The intelligent oil minder is a good point. I like the trailer towing mileage disapled. 10% of my mileage has been with a trailer. The thing that stinks about the trailer mileage is it does not track trailers with a 4 pin connector. The XLTs also have the tailgate lock, maybe all trucks.

There is also the stuff that all trucks have like tow haul mode, that down shifts going down hill or coming into a stop. Then you have shift buttons on the shifter so you can downshift. I can be running 80mph on the interstate and pull on an exit ramp and slow to 30mph without touching the brakes, just from down shifting. Then you have the manual trans mode. Optional locking differential. Tailgate step. Back up camera on XLT and higher trucks. The new trucks have the pro trailer backup assit. Tire pressure monitoring system is nice, which all new vehicles have it. New Ford all have XM. The nicer trucks have auto climate controls. The new superdutys have the 360* camera, on Lariat and up I think. The turn signals are nice on the new fords. The one touch power down on on both front windows is nice. I could go on and on.....New trucks are safer. I forgot the exhaust brake on the diesel.

$30k today is like $22K back in 2001.CPI Inflation Calculator
