MF35, MF135, MF203 with loader.
Hi all, not at all new to machinery or tractors - just to Shibaura tractors. I recently bought this one, cheap, in its current condition to repair and keep. It is what I need - 20BHP diesel, 60" mid-mount mowing deck, HST, 3PL, PTO, P/ST and 4WD - a lot of attributes for a guy who has to look after 5 acres. I need something better than a 38" ride-on.
I have found a collapsed and shattered bearing in the gearbox on the main drive shaft, directly beneath the front edge of the top cover that the seat bolts onto, and where two housings meet. I need to split the tractor there to work on the gearbox. My problem is that I can't separate the two halves. The sealant on the casings has released but it looks like a shaft is holding the two halves together.
Is there something else to remove in the back end - perhaps a snap ring on a shaft? I have not yet removed the lift cover, and I'm hoping I don't have to, but I don't want to damage this further.
I'll try to add pictures. It's the same tractor as a Ford New Holland 1220. Information on these tractors is scarce. Any knowledgeable help will be greatly appreciated.
I also copied this post to the Shibaura tractors section - hope you can help! Thank you in advance.

Do you have a parts manual for the Shibaura Ford 1220? I only have the Service Manual in downloadable PDF. You can typically find what bearing size you need there and order a 'name' brand industrial bearing like SKF, NSK, etc as a replacement. The bearing would need to match the load and forces for the main shaft. Not too hard to figure out. Overkill is always better. Price would be around $30 to $55 for something like this. Don't get scammed paying over $60. This bearing would be nearly a press-on. Not much play at all, nearly liner to shaft interface. If you measure the shaft end, it will be METRIC made to JIS standards and not SAE.

Thanks for your reply.
Good info and great ideas - in fact I found a parts catalogue late last night. I haven't looked closely at any diagrams yet, but it is in Japanese 😅 could be useful but hard work!
I reckon putting in some high-load bearings - at least where that one has failed.
A closer study of the exploded parts view awaits.

So far I have tried to understand the exploded view of the relevant section on my laptop screen, but it's still not as easy as it sounds. Fortunately, the part names are also in English, but only as "shaft" or "bearing" however I am not even near giving up!
I would really love a workshop manual - who can send me a copy?
I can send a parts catalogue to whomever wants a copy.

Excuse my ignorance here, but if the tractor is a Ford (new Holland ) 1220 why are you looking at Japanese parts diagrams?

Hi, the tractor is actually a Shibaura S320, they made the same tractor for Ford New Holland, a 1220, and even put blue paint on it. More people know about a 1220 - that's the reason I'm hoping to find some help here.

Hi guys, some good news after a protracted effort on Sunday. Harry's link to the Case-New Holland parts catalogue was a help, and a lot easier to understand, even though the Shibaura PDF I downloaded was describing the parts also in English, on the C-NH site you only need to shadow the part to see the description - a lot less to-and-fro time.
The breakthrough came when my friend looked up from underneath the gear-case, which I had already done, at the driveshaft to the front axle and spotted a set-screw in the U-joint. I couldn't see it because the shaft was evidently turned a bit, putting the 12mm hex-head out of sight!
Removed the shaft, then the gearbox straight off the rear end casing as expected. Removed a couple more components and found another few surprises. I'm wondering if it's indeed sensible to repair it, or look for a replacement 'box or rear half.
Oh, nearly forgot the best news ... today I ordered a workshop repair manual - albeit for a C-NH 1220 - from a supplier here in Australia. A traditional book, seems over 3" thick, it should arrive in a few days, cost AU$55.40 inc postage! I'm looking forward to seeing this one - should be a huge help!
I will add some pics from my phone later.
Thanks to all for collective efforts so far.

Additional scary pics:
If this isn't enough, I also have to remove the diff pinion shaft for repair - another several days' work!
