Ford or Dodge?

I drive 1K miles a month. Sooooooo,,,,,,,, I should spend $40K to buy a new truck that rides better and gets better mileage??? :confused3:

My overhead hasn't been reset since I bought the truck. It says 18.5 mpg. The few times I've done the math it's been 15 mpg.

For a truck that will do the work it does, I think it gets excellent mileage. When your new trucks are 19 years old and have 260K miles on them we'll talk again about how nice they are. :)

Not telling anyone what to buy, just stating the facts..

I drove a 2003 F350 dually 4x4 crew for 11 years as a daily driver. We pulled a fifth wheel camper during that time. It rode like a F350. Parking was a bear. But it was perfect for pulling the camper. I loved it. Had to replace an alternator. I put 75K miles on it in 11 years.

We don't camp anymore so I now drive an 07 2500 HD Chevy. It rides OK and is easier to park than the dually. My only issue is the access getting in and out of the truck. Took it to a fabricator and lowered the Nerf bars 2". Tolerable but still high for a short ball fat old man. It's a good truck.

If I was in the market like you I would get a 1/2 ton with the highest payload available. I've never owned a RAM but a close friend makes his living repossessing vehicles. He runs nothing but RAM's HD and swears by them.

As the baby boomers are retiring truck manufacturers are building good riding 1/2 ton crew cabs for the family with easy egress. It's difficult to get both ride quality and haul capacity. My 2500 rides good but, if you hit highways in need of repair on the interstate at speed it will rattle your chops. That is the trade off for a relatively short WB extended cab 9200# 4x4 rated truck.

Those calculations are fun. I had a boss that traded in one Prius for another, and said it was the best money he ever spent. Without getting too much off track, it was cheaper to buy a 5,000 dollar work truck that got 12mpg and scrap it every 5 years for another in his situation. Obviously less and less true the more you drive/longer you keep the vehicle.

In your case, driving 1000 miles a month and getting 15mpg @ $3.29 a gallon, it would take 28.5 years to break even buying a 40,000 new truck, even if it got 25mpg and you sold your current truck for 10k. Not counting maintenance costs, which can be significant.

I knew it would take awhile to pay out but never dreamed it'd be that long. And not sure the purchased truck would last that long!!! :D

First of all, you don't have to spend 40K to get a NEW decent equipped 1/2 ton...

Secondly, you do get 5 to 10K back when you sell it, even with high millage...

I just kept my older HD truck and bought a new 1/2 ton, so for the once in a great while I need a HD pu, I have one around to do that job.

I'm seeing a lot of 1/2 tons around here with 8-10K miles on them for 25-26 grand.. Original stickers of 38K

That's how I bought most of my trucks, a year old with less than 15K on them, I saved a lot of money..

I see a lot of used ones, decent deals, but I don’t want a crew cab with a 5.5 foot bed. That’s about all I see used. Rarely do you see a used ref cab long bed less than 10 years old for sale, unless it’s new and those aren’t all that prevalent. And you better want white.

Nobody suggested that you do. The comments I've read were directed to your statement "I think my F250 rides very good...."
The roads in Missouri must be a lot better than places that I travel.
