OK finished the job about a week ago. Turned into more than just the belt. I was gonna be a cheapo and not do the water pump. But there was a bit of evidence of the shaft weaping water as it looked oily and had dirt stuck to it. So i changed it. After my online discound i paid a wopping $11 for the pump. After removing the double platnum champion plugs (to get rid of compression) that were put in less than like 50k miles ago i discovered them so badly eroded you could not make out the electrode from the ceramic on it! So i put in motorcraft platnums.
I pulled the balancer off just far enough to slip the belt off, as the puller was cocking over. The adapter would not unthread out of the crank and i could not find 2 nuts in town that day to fit on the shaft (did not think of cutting one in 2??) i got the only thing i could find. A castle nut, adn welded it to the adapter to then back it off. Had to then grind/cut the nut off the adapter so that i could return the $100 advance auto loaner tool and not be stuck with it.
OK so i got it back togeather (going to replace a leaking heater T in tonight) and amazing the power with new plugs. Plus the noise at idle is gone, the original reason for doing this. I guess the belt streached over the 100K miles that were put on it, and because the auto tensioner is locked against the belt and not allowed to tighten as the belt streaches like a normal serpantine belt i guess there was a bit of slack in it causing noise/vibration? Anyway its gone.
Thanks for the help for those that provided it, esp the PDF of the install. I also did look at youtube for how to get the tentioner loose without the tool. Wayeasier than i was making it out, i thought it would be way tight, you just use a big screwdriver to pry it back and then tighten it down out of the way.
