The only time a simple hole won't cut it is if you plan to do water or flood crossings. In the case of water crossings, then tap in a nipple, put a hose on it run it up high and put a check valve on the end.

What is your concern for water crossing since the intercooler is always pressurized and would just blow bubbles.

I suppose the risk comes if you go deep enough to overcome the air pressure in the intercooler. Figure about 0.44 psi for every foot under water. What's the typical air pressure in the intercooler?

On turbo applications, air to air intercoolers are under some type of positive pressure any time the engine is running. You can check this by using your finger on the hole at idle. A check valve is a good idea if you're getting into water crossings or flooding areas.

At idle yes, at cruise it would absolutely be pulling vacuum.

...The Ram did have better MPG but used more energy (KWH)...

According to the EPA ratings, the Ram used more energy with it's city rating, but less for highway. Additionally, using Motor Trend's Real MPG testing, the Ram used less energy in city, highway and combined.

If you're that far underwater you're probably looking at tow cable to pull you out!

In $PM the Dodge and the Ford are about the same, depending on fuel costs in your area. Probably the most shocking difference is passing at 65 MPH. I don't know that I could live with the Dodge there. Also the Ford is the only one that could pull the 7,000 lb trailer to 70 MPH, gotta be able to do that on any haul. Still I would like the drive the Dodge, but for Ford to out do both the Chev and the Dodge by that much with a tiny 2.7L gas engine is phenomenal. It is the truck the year in any realistic rating.

How can it win the comparison test if it cant (legally) haul their test load? Their 1000# test load puts the Ram 40# overweight (payload is 960#) before the driver even gets in the truck.

The ford as configured was rated for 5000lbs.....

I just love checking on on these threads for stuff like this. I didn't go back all the way but I expect some more from the Ford folks like Diamondpilot are in this thread.

Looks like they may not have gotten one with the "Trailer Tow Package" and as such it was only rated to tow 5000#.

I know! Isn't that the craziest thing.. I'm surprised it didn't collapse under the load! !!

I'm not quite sure I understand how you came to this conclusion, for a turbocharged engine. I can't speak for a gasser, but my Duramax is running about 12 psi at cruise. It runs about 5 or so at idle.

I thought the same thing. Not sure how you could have a vacuum downstream of the turbo.

Because a turbo is not producing boost until it's spun up. If a turbo was producing boost all the time there would be no efficiencies to be found.

The Motor Trend article. Mostly the acceleration numbers in the chart. The only one that gets the 7000 lb trailer 70MPH score.

Comparison: 2015 Ford F-150 vs. Ram 1500 vs. Chevrolet Silverado All Pages

The article also says that in the end the AL materials gave them pause because of the unknowns. Me, I give Ford credit for pushing the envelope. They should have won.

I must be missing that chart on my tablet, because from the text it says they are all able to accelerate from 60 to 70 mph, on a steady 6% grade.
