What sort of towing/carrying capacity do you require ? What's wrong with a 4X4 Diesel Nissan Patrol or a Toyota Lancruiser ute ? I can't imagine owning a vehicle that chews fuel to the tune of 8-12mpg . We use the Nissan and the Toyota with gooseneck trailers pulling 3 horses and do'nt burn those sort of figures . And when empty run at around 28mpg . For storage you can put under body boxes under the tray .

I'd love to have a diesel powered Landbruiser! Unfortunately, they don't ship them here to the states. I've read plenty where Toyota makes a darn good diesel and I've also read plenty about how durable and powerful the diesel Landcruisers are. I'm afraid that by the time they do have them here in the U.S., they'll have them choked down by so much EPA stuff that they won't be worth a hoot.

For years I wouldn't consider buying a V10 vehicle and dealers begged the manufacturers to not dump the unsellable beasts on them. They will never pull like a diesel and they will never get good fuel economy. However, times have changed and I see a place for the V10s. Heck, I even bought one.

I would never use my V10 to haul my 20,000 pound trailer, but for most day to day chores it simply makes more sense to me than my diesel vehicles now. Sure it gets about 2 to 3 miles per gallon less than the diesel units, but gasoline now costs between 70 cents to over a dollar less per gallon. There goes the whole 'save money by driving diesel' thing! That doesn't even take into account that a diesel will cost you about 6 to 8 grand (or more) up front when you buy. What really made me buy a gas V10 (Ford 6.8) last month was when I discovered that I could buy the exact same unit for almost 12,000 dollars less with the gas V10 than the PowerStroke diesel; which is going to cost more to own and operate.

I'll always need my diesels for heavy hauling, but for hauling...say 12k or less, I'd have to go with a V10 gasser right now. With things the way they are, I think it's a steal to get the V10's so cheap as compared to the same vehicle with a diesel. I think that will change really soon when most people realize that the V10 will haul what they need and costs less to operate. I personally like the diesel better, but I'll be darned if I'm gonna pay an extra 12 grand just to hear it rattle. :)

BTW, I get about 10 in mostly city driving and just over 14.5 on the highway empty and not pulling anything.

F250 4x4 cc v10, I get 14.5 @ 70mph on the highway...add 3000 lbs and it drops to 11.5 mpg same speed. in town empty it'll do around 12.5 or so. speed up on the highway and it drops about .5 mpg per 5 mph. slow down to 60 on the highway and it will pull close to 17 mpg.

Dargo noted we can't get those diesel versions. To make it worse, Toyota deems the Landcruiser an ultra-luxury SUV when it sells them here, and their starting price is around $60,000, rising rapidly with common options. The only people who can afford them here are people who will never use their capabilities. You guys down under get a number of nice vehicle choices that we don't. It is really a bit weird that for how big the US pickup truck market is, we really only have two size choices (three if you count extra-extra-big trucks like the Ford super dutys).

I tow cattle trailers on a regular basis loaded to about 10,000 pounds with the feedbox on the truck(2000 lb capacity plus the weight of the box). 12,000 on the equipment trailer and I have towed a LGP D3C series III hydrostat dozer(18000 lbs) on that trailer with the 3/4 ton diesel that I had. This truck will be used the same way.
I wish we could get the diesel trucks here you can get over there, but I'm sure by the time the EPA regs got done with it, it wouldn't be the same.

I just took it for granted you would have the same vehicles as us . We have a large range of 4X4's here , and we also have a few guys who do 6 wheeler conversions on them so they can carry extra weight . They also do a version of the Patrol and 100 series Landcruiser wagon cut through the cab behind the rear doors and an extended chassis with a flat bed tray in 4X4 or 6x6 . Check out Six Wheeler Conversions :: Home of the 6 Wheeler to give you an idea of what i mean . They also do all the other jap utes as well although our shiny bums have just changed the regs on them and have de-rated their GCM .

2000 F250 4x4, V10, 5 speed, 373 gears, posi rear end, reg cab, 8' box. Going back and forth to work on country roads, I get about 14 mpg. Pulling my 14k 5th wheel, I get about 9 mpg (10 mpg out of New England on flat roads).

I know of one guy that bought a 2003 3/4 ton 4x4 Ford SD std cab long bed with the 5.4 and auto trans. He got 12 -14 empty and never did tell us what he got pulling 12k!

He switched to a 2005 Ford SD ext cab long bed with V10 also 4x4 3/4 ton and he increased to 13-15 empty and 9-10 towing.

He changed when towing behind a similar SD with V10 that was towing more weight (both going to the same place nose to tail with him in the back). After getting there, the 5.4 used about 30% more gas. He traded off shortly there after. Smaller is not always better when it comes to towing / hauling.
