What sort of towing/carrying capacity do you require ? What's wrong with a 4X4 Diesel Nissan Patrol or a Toyota Lancruiser ute ? I can't imagine owning a vehicle that chews fuel to the tune of 8-12mpg . We use the Nissan and the Toyota with gooseneck trailers pulling 3 horses and do'nt burn those sort of figures . And when empty run at around 28mpg . For storage you can put under body boxes under the tray .
I'd love to have a diesel powered Landbruiser! Unfortunately, they don't ship them here to the states.

I've read plenty where Toyota makes a darn good diesel and I've also read plenty about how durable and powerful the diesel Landcruisers are. I'm afraid that by the time they do have them here in the U.S., they'll have them choked down by so much EPA stuff that they won't be worth a hoot.
For years I wouldn't consider buying a V10 vehicle and dealers begged the manufacturers to not dump the unsellable beasts on them. They will
never pull like a diesel and they will never get good fuel economy.
However, times have changed and I see a place for the V10s. Heck, I even bought one.
I would never use my V10 to haul my 20,000 pound trailer, but for most day to day chores it simply makes more sense to me than my diesel vehicles now. Sure it gets about 2 to 3 miles per gallon less than the diesel units, but gasoline now costs between 70 cents to over a dollar less per gallon. There goes the whole 'save money by driving diesel' thing! That doesn't even take into account that a diesel will cost you about 6 to 8 grand (or more) up front when you buy. What really made me buy a gas V10 (Ford 6.8) last month was when I discovered that I could buy the exact same unit for almost 12,000 dollars less with the gas V10 than the PowerStroke diesel; which is going to cost more to own and operate.
I'll always need my diesels for heavy hauling, but for hauling...say 12k or less, I'd have to go with a V10 gasser right now. With things the way they are, I think it's a steal to get the V10's so cheap as compared to the same vehicle with a diesel. I think that will change really soon when most people realize that the V10 will haul what they need and costs less to operate. I personally like the diesel better, but I'll be darned if I'm gonna pay an extra 12 grand just to hear it rattle.
BTW, I get about 10 in mostly city driving and just over 14.5 on the highway empty and not pulling anything.
