For the record:

My 2004 F350, extended cab, long bed, V-10, 4.30 rear end, automatic gets 9mpg on the highway pulling a 5,000 lb boat and 11 without a load.

My last truck had a crate 502 cu.in. gasser. That thing would pull a barn off its foundation, if the gravel didnt give way. If i wasn't doing a lot of towing on a lot of long trips, I never would have traded it in. 7 mpg no matter what. The "new" truck is a '00 F-350 srw, ext. cab long box. Love that 6 speed manual. I cheat a little bit, I use a chip, exhaust, and intake, so i get around 19-21mpg empty, 14-16 in the winter with hubs locked in all the time. I know it "wears them out" but 150,000 miles and no problems, so I don't care. When I haul around 10,000lbs, i get and average of 14mpg. I loved the V10 when I test drove it, but I took a gamble on the diesel

Just an update. I pulled same trailer 300 miles back to the shop. Winds were light and variable. Still averaged 4.5 MPG. My computer had my overall avereage mileage up to 11.7, and that fell to 9.7. LOL

We just bought a camper. We picked it up Friday. I filled up when we left town. Drove to get it empty. Hooked up and came back home a different way. All told it was 255 miles and used 20.943 gallons of fuel. I ran right at 120 miles empty and 135 miles loaded. Wish I would have filled up before I hooked the trailer up, but I was still "full". Though I was pretty close to empty when I got back home as I only have a 25 gallon tank. I'm figureing I used somewhere between 6 & 7 gallons of fuel on the way over and then 13 - 14.xxx on the way home. That puts me between 17 & 20 running empty and 9 - 9.5 pulling the camper. It was a 32' Jayco BHDS weighing in at 8,000 lbs. empty. I'm pulling it with my '99 Silverado ECSB 4x4. I've got the 5.3 4l60 and 3.73 gears. It had its tongue hanging out on one hill, but other than that it did OK. BTW, on that hill, my only issue was temp jumped from 195 to 230. At I backed off and let the speed drop from 45 MPH, I probably wouldn't have even seen that.

Don't shoot me for pulling up an old thread...at least I searched first for a relevent post. :)

Well I got a shock today when I made my first fill up after buying this truck. I got a 2001 Silverado 2500HD, 8.1 L with 5 speed auto Allison trans, 3.73 rear. Yes, I was warned it liked the gas. Its a big motor and its and older truck although it only has 110,000 kms (66,000 miles).

I only did a short test run of 200 km (120 miles). About a couple trips in varying lengths of travel, some 10km (6 miles), some 80km (48 miles). Most were traveling secondary hwys at 80km (50 mph). I did my absolute best to keep the rpm between 1500-2000. I was not hauling anything other than my sorry butt.

The truck burned 48.327 L which is 12.76 US gallons (or 10.63 Imp gallons). That's 24 L/100 km or 9.73 US gallon (11.69 Imp gallon) per 60 miles.

That's 12 miles per US gallon. I'm going to shove a bottle of Seaform down its throat, clean out the MAF and replace the filter. We'll see then what happens.

Not to pour salt in a wound but if you only drove 120 miles and used 12.76 US gallons of gas, that's just 9.4 miles per gallon... (120/12.76 = 9.40)
Sorry

It is what it is. The GM 8.1 and the Ford 6.8 are monsters in the torque dept. and make great tow rigs but like you said, they like the gas. I am really surprised they put 3.73 gears behind the 8.1, not that I have ever looked that close at one but most of the Ford 6.8's have 4.30's and some have 4.10's. Many of the Expeditions with the 6.8 had 3.73 but most of the trucks had the 4.30's and 4.10's.

My 8.1 has 3.73.They are fine with those gears, the allison has a low 1st gear, and the 8.1 has a bit more down low than a 6.8 v10.Once the rpms are in the higher ranges the v10 can easily match the 8.1 or make more hp.I only get 1mpg worse in town than my buddies identical truck to mine ,but his has the 6.0 gasser.on the highway i get the same as him.Towing,I get noticeably better mpg than him with a bigger camper. His RPMS towing w 4.10 are in the 2800-3500 range, mine are 1900-2500.I have a lot more pulling power as well.

Sounds reasonable to me. Just never guessed they would put 3.73's behind the 8.1 Just think of it with 4.10's? It would be a real monster.
