Rudolf Diesel started off choosing between coal dust and vegetable oil. I think they used peanut oil at first. Coal slurry (coal dust and water) have also been tried. Thank goodness for dinosaur juice.

The ones I was referring to looked like a BBQ grill on back bumper and the smoke from smothered fire was burned via hose into carb,

In WWII the Germans used some sort of wood gasification unit on some of their military vehicles. I think the bombing of the Ploeste Oil fields facility's might have had something to do with this. I think the wood was cooked in the unit you described and the gas given off was run into the carburetor.
