there was some frost beverage consumption going on the rest of the afternoon, and we didn't get nearly as much work done after that!

But I'll bet you now know at least 100 different ways you could have done the original better... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Our biggest problem with posts are fire ants. Those little so-n-so's can eat right through a treated line post in a month flat. Copper, chromium, and arsenic doesn't slow them down. Creosote doesn't bother them... nothing seems to faze them. Given time, they will take over the world.

By the way, every project I have takes longer and costs more than I ever predict. I am a bad estimator!

Glad to hear that I'm not the only one with poor judgement about project time lines. I can usually use a multiple of 4 when estimating how long something will take.

Fence project:

Hey sound guy, just completed copper treatemtn on round post number 257. Of the 257 I have 100 to paint wth ashphalt sealer. I have 30 square osts treated and 15 painted. Just trucked home tonight 1136 linear feet of 1x6x16' spruce boards for rails. Already ahve another 1600 lf stacked. The time line for this project will be 6-8 months. Dug, by hand, 5 post holes 32" deep - 60+ minutes.

I have a crew of friends lined up along with a rental auger for square posts. Round posts will be tapped in with FEl.

Lots of fun so far.....

I feel your pain brother. Manual PHD's are well.. very tireing.

Good luck

For the fellow with fire ant problems. Try this. Monthly I make a round around the property on my tractor in low gear, and I use a hand held pump up style sprayer. I primarilly use it for spraying roundup ont e fence line to keep the green off the hotwire. howeve rthe last few years I've been mixing some permethrin emulsion into the mix. Has virtually eliminated any bugs withing a couple feet of my fence. even cured the neighbors fence of termites.. his fence is pt.. mine's cresote. After a few months of applications.. i think they moved on to less hazardous fare..

Thanks for the hint. Sounds like a perfect solution to the problem. Wonder how it mixes with Spike? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Soundguy,
I am building 2500ft of barb fence using 6" round wood post. It is a chore just digging the holes buy hand once you get down 1.50 ft the shovel is slow going.

I am tamping post byhand and that gets old quick to. Have not got to bracing but thats should be fairly easy?

I have some help on occasion which I appreciate dearly though.

I make a lot of fence as part of making my living. Being off the flatland where 4 or 5 wire barbed is the standard, it took me a while to get used to the 6'6" page (deer) wire that's the standard out here in my new home area.

Rock is an awful problem when setting posts out here. Many times I'll start to drive, hit something, go off kilter and wind up either pushing or pulling the post back to vertical with the tractor then filling the gap with crushed rock to stabilize it.

I've attached a pic of my pounder on the tractor.

Hey goodoleboy. If I was just sinking barb wire for perimeter fence, I might go with smaller line posts.. but that's just personal choice.

I really need to get hand tamp tool. I have just been using my PHD ends or a shovel end to tamp in the soil.. no matter what you use.. it's slow going.

When i did mine.. I set my corner post 6-8x8, and then just used a line post as an angle brace and using some brace wire.

If I'm foing field 4x4 wire, or 2x4 wire, I put in an "H" brace every hundred feet or so depending on fence height and weight.. lightweight fencing.. I might even go 150' or more for a "H" brace. I make my H-Braces from line posts and brace wire. Then I end with another corner post if the end of the run, or if i change directions. Gate hinge posts I'll use corner posts for, if the gate is a 16' or 20', or perhaps a 5-7x8 for small gates.

On barb wire.. I may not use an H brace unless I'm doing over 300' on a run.. I find that 2 good corners will hold the wire fine as long as you have tposts or line posts.. etc.
