Buying Advice Fork exstentions advice

My buddie has a big massey fergason tractor and we want to make fork exstenios for his 3' long by 4" wide 1" thick forks . We have some heavy duty 4"w by 1" thick 6' long channel iron that could fit over the forks and we could have 2 straps made to hold them on to the forks . The lift on the tractor is 2800lbs and we want to lift fence pallets that weigh about 1000 to 1500lbs off a tractor trailer bed truck . We are going to experiment this weekend to see what we can lift. Does anyone have any suggestions or experiance using a tractor for a fork lift ?

the extentions you described are the normal acceptable way of extending forks. One strap at the inner end of each and the second strap about 3/5 ths of the original forks. If you taper the underside of the channel at the open end it will help in guidance. Naturally the welds are the important part of the whole deal.

Will those extensions fit the stock 4xx series forks? I was wondering, because the description says that they fit forks that are 2" thick by 4" wide. No way are my forks that thick.

Tracdoc, I think he was referencing his Massey Fergason tractor. I was just throwing it out there in case he might be able to work with these extensions or maybe search for others as an alternative, maybe save him some time. I agree they would be to big for a Power Trac.

It would be unwise to add fork extensions to the 425 forks. The machine doesn't have enough ballast to safely support a load way out that far. The original post was concerning a large tractor.

There are several sets at Northern if you want to go that route. (Here) is a shorter set even cheaper. I have not done an extensive search, but there may even be other better fitting extenders out there. Good luck hope it works out for you and your buddy.

i think when you make or buy extenions they make them a little bigger so if you bend them they don't get stuck on your forks

Makes sense, and thus a chain at the base end to keep it from sliding off.
