My wife is moving her biz from one side of the county, to a spot closer to home. The present shop is in another area code. Can we keep the same number? or forward to a new number indefinately?

The way our phone company works all we do is punch in 72# and then the number we want to forward our phone line to and that is it..does not matter where in the country the receiving phone is...then punch in 73# to cancel..

If yours is the same, as long as you maintain a phone and keep paying for the line I would think it would work..but other phone companies may be different..Look in the first few pages of your phone companies phone book under customer services / call forwarding and it should detail it there...

Get a bluetooth enabled cellphone with the current business number in the current county. Then go to cell phone store or google online for a cellphone "adapter" to connect her new store phones into and connect to that cellphone adapter via a bluetooth wireless connection for the new business location. Saw one in the local cellphone store and others are available online. Google "cellphone to landline".

If you switch to a alternate phone company such as the Cable provider in your area you may be able to keep the same number and not even have to get a new one.

You can also go to a company like 8x8, Inc and have a phone number with any area code you want.

Exactly right ..I forgot about that...he should also be able just to transfer his number to a new cell phone..they have a law now that allows folks to keep their numbers...that way he can forget forwarding all together...

Verizon has a gizmo you can use to go wireless and keep your current phone number. When you move, just unplug and take it with you. Looking into this for our own use as well:

Home Phone Connect

Lose the high home phone bill, keep the same home phone number. Home Phone Connect is the perfect solution for customers who want to reduce their monthly bills.

  • The device connects your home phone to the Verizon Wireless network.
  • Just sign up, plug in the device, and start making and receiving calls.
  • You can keep your current phone number, or we can set up a new one for you.

Flexible plans start as low as $9.99 monthly access.

This might work for you. You port the number to a local prepaid cell phone and then port that cell number to google vocie (I think it is a one time $20 fee) Then whatever phone numbers you have in the future you can tie to the google voice account. To clarify, google voice only allows you to port cell lines to their service, so that is why you have to switch the number to a cell phone first.
Good Luck, Dave

Thanks, I'll look into that - I wonder if I can do that for her biz number?

i have requested a magic jack plus for Christmas this year: i was going to go ahead and buy it the other day, but then decided the kids are always complaining about not knowing what to get me for Christmas: IF it works as well as they say it does, you might switch the number you want to keep to that, and have it anywhere theres an internet connection??

When we moved from CA to WA, my wife was able to keep her business and work from home. She uses a cell phone for clients to call her with a CA number and area code. She uses a local number to call CA with free long distance.

Sometimes clients ask her where she is when their caller ID reads a out of state area code. :D

Works great.
