Foton getting too hot

/ Foton getting too hot #11
Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum but looks VERY valuable for info. I've got a 2006 foton 254 that seems to get hot into the red rather quickly. Fluid seems to be circulating as it is hot in the rad. The fan belt is tight and I don't see anything else wrong. The only thing is that the air intake and battery are in front of the rad which is kind of stupid I think. Can this be moved somewhere else? Not alot of room on this unit. Is there something else to check as well? I can go about 30 minutes in 20 degree weather and it gets this hot.

Thanks

You may be able to move the battery forward on the tray about 1/2 inch with a block of wood behind it.

Greg has a fix to relocate the filter air intake. I have also seen the filter mounted like a second exhaust stack.

It would be interesting to see this. My air filter is quite big to fit anywhere else. However I cleaned alot of debris out of the rad today so now it is clean! It was clogged full of stuff so I think this will make a big difference.

Presumably you're talking about the intake relocation. I'm not familiar with the air cleaner housing on the 2006 Foton. Is it a big round cannister with a round tube sticking out where the air is sucked in? If yes, what is the diameter of the intake tube?

Thanks for the quick post, Yeh, that's one thing I was reading is the stuff getting in the rad can be a real problem so I will clean it. My mix is about 70/30 so I think this is OK. I don't loose any fluid from the rad other that the occasional spit out the overflow pipe by the cap.

40% antifreeze/60% water will give you more cooling power.

Now that the radiator is clean, keep it clean. Find a filter or screen fine enough to keep the crud out and course enough to let air pass. I use a Hogs Hair filter that really stands up to being cleaned.

A photo of the engine air intake would be nice to aid in relocating it.

Hey Greg, yeh it's the big round black cannister in front of the rad. I think the hose is 2" from the cannister to the intake manifold. Not sure if I will attempt to move it yet; I may try with the clean rad first and if I don't overheat, than leave it alone.

Sounds like it should work then. But I left the big round canister where it was. It's the air intake location that I moved. I went to a farm supply store and bought 5 feet of reinforced 2" suction hose. Gotta be suction hose, cuz the intense vacuum of the diesel intake will flatten most other kinds.

Once home, I cut the hose into a 3' section and a 2' section. Then I loosened the straps that hold the canister in place, and attached the 3 foot section to the air intake tube. Once in place, I rotated the intake canister so that the suction hose would curve up and over the top of the radiator - and head towards the fuel tank. 3 feet of hose was just long enough to reach the fuel tank straps (when then held it in place). If I had to do it over again, I'd have cut 3.5 and 1.5 foot sections. Anyway - now the engine was sucking in cooler air from in front of my left shin, instead of sucking up (warmer) air that should have been going through the radiator.

But it was too effective for winter use. The temp gauge never even got close to 80C. So I'd replace the 3 foot piece with the 2 foot section in the fall. Instead of running the two footer back towards the fuel tank, I ran it over the exhaust manifold and past the muffler.

Understand that I did this on a JM254. The dimensions on your Foton may not be the same, so take measurements before you buy and cut the suction hose.

Hey Greg do you have pictures of this; I understand what your doing here but would like to see it. The only mod I have to do is possibly add straps to the cannister to rotate it like you did as there is a welded bracket on it now that is bolted to a frame mounted to the battery holder so I can't just rotate it a easily. As for simplicity and performance, sure alot better than the factory!! Did you also relocate your battery to the front where the weights are?

I did not relocate the battery or the air filter canister, since the intake location was the biggest reason for insufficient air getting through the radiator fins. It caused a vortex between and among the battery and the canister. Once I got it to suck air from somewhere other than in front of the radiator the thing ran cool as a cucumber. Of course I continued to use a pre-filter, since the little cooling fan still wanted to draw that crap into the fins behind the battery. The pre-filter stopped that.

As far as not being able to rotate the canister, perhaps consider a different suction hose path. Route it below or around the side of the radiator. Nothing says you can't then route the hose along side the block rather than up by the valve cover where mine was. The main thing is to get fresh air from somewhere ELSE than up front of the radiator.

But unfortunately I got rid of both those Jinmas years ago, so I'm afraid the photo request cannot be honored. That said, there are others who have followed my example in the past. Perhaps some of them are reading this......
