I notice that the tachometer on my new GC1720 has a mark for 540 PTO RPM exactly at 2600 RPM. If the gears are different between the GC1710 and GC1720 PTO's that mark should be about 3000 RPM. It looks to me like MF cheaped out and used the same dashboard graphics for the two models. If that's the case many GC1720 owners are going to be running their PTO at lower than rated speed, assuming they use the tach needle as a reference.

Or, the gears are really the same between the two models. I think I'll try calling MF tomorrow and see if anyone will talk to me about what looks like a discrepancy.

It says right in the manual (3-23), GC1705/10 makes 540 rpm at the PTO at 2532rpm and the GC1715/20 at 2829rpm. Can you take a picture of your tach? My tach does not have the resolution it sounds like yours does.

GC1710, I looked at the tach scale this morning and I have to admit I read it wrong yesterday! I guess too much adrenalin from operating a new tractor mixed with some paranoia over my wallet being so much lighter. I made an edit note in my original post so that no one reading it in the future will go off on a tangent because of my mistake.

Thanks,

Bob

Just for entertainment purposes - fuel consumption is typically measured as grams consumed/horsepower hour at rated engine rpm. It is sometimes a requirement by local governments to include fuel consumption specs on an equipment bid which is where the information came from. For example, the GC2400 fuel consumption was 193 gr/hp hr @ 2600 rpm vs the GC2600 which was 206 gr/hp hr @ 3000 rpm. The GC2400 engine was rated at 22.8 hp so total fuel consumption/hr at 2600 rpm would be (22.8 hp x 1 hr) x 193 grams = 4400 grams/hr. Diesel fuel typically weighs about 3150 grams/gallon. SO - assuming the GC2400 was running at 2600 rpm non stop for 1 hour it would use 1.4 gals/hr. However, there are all sorts of variables that affect that such as engine load, pto load, tire pressure, ground speed, going up hill, type of implement, engine temperature, hydraulic temperature, fuel cetane rating, outside temperature, engine maintenance......... point being, at the end of the day it is a pretty pointless specification. Whats important is you enjoy using the the tractor, it does what you want it to do and it keeps you out of the house.
