I had this same decision to make 2 years ago. I have 5 acres of mainly flat land. And I didn't know squat about tractors. I thought I would be mowing, a little gravel grading, and some firewood moving. So, I bought a brand new
bx2660 with FEL and box scrapper. Picked up a 4' bush hog mower a few weeks later.
Now, to say a BX is a big lawn mower is truly not understanding tractors. That BX did everything I ever asked and more. I Mowed three acres of weeds that were taller than the ROPS bar. No problem. never bogged. Took about an hour, and it looked great. I scrapped my back yard down to dirt in about 2 house (about 1/2 acre), no problem. That little bx is a **** of a machine. Put it in 4wd, lock the back tires, and that thing will pull. I mean pull.
However.......... We then decided to use the back three acres to create a food plot. All kinds of vegetables. From potatoes to corn. And the bx just does not have the weight to do a lot of dirt work. It will plow, and pull a tiller. But it was just to hard on it. Felt sorry for my little 'bota. Felt like I was abusing it. So, I sold it.
Bought a lease return
L3800 a few months ago. It weights almost twice as much, and works the ground really well.
I lost about $1800 in the change over. Live and learn. But I still miss that bx. It was a great piece of equipment.
If you are planning to mow, have a garden, and general above ground work, the bx will way outperform what you think. The bx will do almost everything my L will do, just not as fast. However, the implements cost less, and it is absolutely better on gas. So, decide what you plan on doing with a tractor, then pick out a tractor. That is my two cents........
