Is this a new fad?
Today I stop by to visit my 93yo Mom. Leave and stop at a nearby grocery store, run it to get a few things. One customer ahead of me, about 20yo girl. She leaves, I go to pay, check out lady said girl paid for my groceries! Check-out lady says "she does it a lot". Anyway I ran her down as she was getting into a nice car. I hand her cash (a little more than groceries). She refused...but I won...saying give it to someone needy (we both were laughing)...I put $ in door compartment and left. She said ok.
Is this some sort of new fad? I don't look poor. Seems strange!

3 times in the last year some gal in front of me at the drive thru paid for me! The last time it was for only 4 pieces of chicken nuggets from mcdonalds for the dog.

By the time I get to the window they are gone.

My buddy says it's called pay forward.

I generally look like a street person so maybe that's it!

I hate to bring this up because it drives me insane, but I'm a little shocked that this "fad" isn't disallowed for violating peoples privacy.

To teach them responsibility, we made the kids save towards a car. As an incentive we would match up to $2,000 towards a car.

They had to pay their own insurance. If they couldn't pay, they had to work it off. And like the real world it had to be paid on or before it was due. Or make arrangements if you can't pay (work it off).

Daughter decided that she wouldn't pay. Told us tough, her friends didn't have to pay their insurance, she wasn't gonna pay. She found her car on blocks with the tires missing.

She had to earn her tires back

She bought her own place at 21 yo

We raised our son and daughter that same way.
Our oldest grand daughter, now 22, just bought a $450 K house and that after she had paid cash 4 her slightly used Honda.
Both grand daughters held after school jobs and had to save for 'toys and clothes' but tuition and books were always by parents. (as we did).
Son is a research MD doing really well. His first car was a $50. VW that he DIY rebuild, drove for 2 years and sold for $500. (LOL cost me $$'s in welding gas and tools but he learned)

Inflation is however scary.
Housing now starting in the $400K's while my first suburb house cost me $13 K.
LOL, guess I'm showing my age.

Housing costs vary drastically across the country. We paid $125k for our current house 10 years ago, put about $30k into it, and is now valued at $240k.

Daughter paid $145k for her house, son paid $165 for his.

These houses would probably be listed at $800k plus out in San Francisco, or LA.

A $300k house here is a Mansion.

How would she know the total?

I never carry cash, so I couldn't repay.
Apparently she used a card (credit or debit), told clerk ring his up too...then quickly left without receipt. (All my guess). I didn't get a receipt.

I don't see my privacy was violated. I told my Dad before he passed a few years ago was I appreciated (as others said here) how I had to pay for everything...even room/board after I turned 18, going to college.
He always wore patched clothes. When he would pick up trash along highway people would stop asking if he needed help. One guy said "I heard a wealthy woman lives down that driveway" he said "yes and she lets me sleep with her occasionally".

Thats how I got my candy when I was a kid. Brother and I would collect all the bottles we could find and turn them in.

When I was a kid we spent a full summer camping at Lake Chelan State Park. Sunday and Monday were giant paydays for gathering left over pop and beer bottles and packing them to a small grocery store near by. They had a great candy selection too.

But that doesn't explain how much she knew to have charged to her card until your order had been totaled up.

But I don't really need to know .... just wondering.

I imagine most people would ask how much the other person's order was before offering to pay. Revealing that would be violating their privacy.

I was expected to write my name and phone number on a page, before sitting down in a sub shop recently. A sheet for all to see. My name, Mr. Smith 905-555-1212

Supposedly, this is for covid tracking. Our state instituted something like this a couple weeks ago, allegedly at the request of the restaurant/hospitality industry. Wife and I decided to use Buck & Wanda Booth (a couple characters from the old tv series "Bones") and the fax # for a company I worked for many years ago. I have no idea why I remember that number. The only place we've eaten at since that rule was put into effect didn't ask.
