I believe your tractor s a closed center system.

Here are the specs.

Hydraulics:
Type: closed center PFC
Capacity: 25.4 gal [96.1 L]
Pressure: -unknown-
Valves: 2 to 4
Valve flow: 18.9 gpm [71.5 lpm]

TractorData.com John Deere 6410 tractor information

So what does this mean in terms of using the log splitter with this tractor? It has two lines to plug into the back of the tractor, one for each cylinder. What type of valve would I need for each of the cylinders if I choose to replace them, which i probably will do, as the valves on there you have to hold the levers to extend and retract the cylinders.

mudbug250,

Here is a closed center log splitter valve if you want to use the splitter with your tractor, and you can not convert the other valve.

Surplus Center - 1 SPOOL 30 GPM CLOSED CENTER LOG SPLITTER VALVE

To test your current log splitter valve for closed center, remove all the hoses and put air in the IN port. With the lever in neutral, no air should come out of the valve. Then, if you move the lever, air should flow out the work ports.

To test for open center, connect air to the IN port, and air should flow out the OUT port in neutral. If the valve has PB, then air will flow out the PB port. If you move the levers, air should come out the work ports.

mudbug250,

You need to determine which valve you have.

If you want a true log splitter valve with detent, you need a log splitter valve.

The valve on there could be any type valve.

There are valve that you have to hold the levers open for both operations.

Some valves have detent on one or both.

An Autovalve has two levers that once set, the cyl will extend and retract and return the lever to neutral.

So test your current valve first and let us know what you have and if it had detent.

This two lever valve will operate the log splitter and another cyl.

mudbug250,

As far as the two hoses, it depends on where the hoses connect.

One of them is the pressure hose and it will go to the IN port on the log splitter valve. The log splitter out hose could go to tank. Trace the other hose from the tractor and see where it goes.

Is your hoses on the back coming from a valve or is it just a QD?

If you decide to go stand alone, you will need an open center valve with the two stage pump as the engine driven pump is pumping all the time, and the fluid must flow through the log splitter valve.

JJ,

So I can't just get a new closed center valve without detent for the log lift? I don't care if it has detent or not, just wanted to put a new valve on there for dependability. But would like a detent or autovalve for the wood splitter cylinder to free up my hands.

My father in law and I tested it quickly when I got it and everything worked properly.

I will see if I can get the rest of the numbers/letters off the valve this afternoon. Like I said previously, all I could get off of it last night was Victor Power Fluids DV 121.

JJ,

I will trace the hoses this afternoon and see where they are routed to and from. But I am guessing it was like you said one pressure out and one was to tank. We only had to use one of the hydraulic controls in the cab to load the entire system.

Here is a closed center valve with no detent.

Surplus Center - 1 SPOOL 45 GPM BRAND DA CC VALVE

This valve can be converted to closed center.

The company that made that valve has been closed down since about 2000.

JJ,

When we hook to our bush hog, we can raise and lower the hydraulic lift using the one hydraulic line hooked to one of the hydraulic hook ups at the back of the tractor. So it seems to me that these hook ups allow flow of fluid out and in, all controlled by one of the hydraulic levers in the cab. Is this beyond power? And does that change the opened/closed center system conversation.

But I will trace the hoses this afternoon and see how everything hooks together.

JJ,
Don't know if this makes any difference but I am hooking to a power beyond on the tactor.

Actually, you are hooking to the hydraulic remote on the tractor like you would power beyond. Closed center systems like yours do not have power beyond. Power beyond is only available in Open center hydraulic systems.

Are your tractor valves in parallel, or they in series.

Tractor data says your tractor is closed center , and that means that all valves using the same pump are in parallel. In a closed center system all valve get equal flow if the GPM rating are the same.

If you put a gage in a tee at the FEL valve, do you have system pressure with the lever in neutral?

If you plug a gage in the QD at the back, do you have system pressure.

Option 3 makes that valve a closed center valve.

An open center valve system has no or very little pressure with all valves in neutral.

Can you verify that your tractor has closed center hyd's.

Your tractor may very well have a PB port, but if it is used in a closed center system, the PB port will be plugged.

The below valve from Prince is for illustration.
