I'd posted a month ago on my 1920's stuck clutch scenario after having been parked for a month or more. After discussing with my tractor shop, he suggested it was probably rusted plate to flywheel as we didn't have the clutch pedal lock down engaged. the fix was to get the tractor on pavement, get it moving and come to a very hard stop in the hopes of breaking the rust weld. Well, it worked and this little advice saved us perhaps $1200 to break apart the tractor for an unecessary clutch job. The best value here is it reaffirms my confidence in Randy at S&G Equipment in El Dorado, CA. He could have told me to bring it in, done the same thing and charged me up the wazzoo. He didn't - Just gave sage advice that worked. That's what great about small towns and fellow tractor owners. Now I feel guilty about not buying my PHD from him!

That's the nice thing about tractors, you can always use one more implement /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Kudos to the guy for not taking all your money.

Your explanation left a bit to the imagination, and I'm not doing too well.

"" the fix was to get the tractor on pavement, get it moving and come to a very hard stop in the hopes of breaking the rust weld ""

" get it moving " By pushing or pulling with another tractor? Or by starting it in gear (if that is possible)?
So the tractor is moving with or without engine power, and in what gear, or in neutral? I'm guessing here it was in gear, but which one. Guessing a high gear being best.

" come to a hard stop " By how? using the brakes? If in gear, the tranny would have the differential moving the transmission, so hitting the brakes to stop would probably put the reverse pressure on the clutch to flywheel contact.

Glad its fixed.
Maybe the tractor can be started with the clutch pedal down and then be immediately motoring around in as high a gear as possible (per safety, surroundings, and engine power). By keeping the clutch pedal down, the torque likely will break the rust bond free.

Another plus for HST tranny /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Reminds me of the time when my clutch linkage broke on my '73 Dodge D100. Had to start it in first and get it moving (thank God for a granny gear) then quickly throw it into second and third as needed. Drove it 15 miles to a weld shop for the fix.

Randy over at S&G and Brian over at Sierra Tractor are both great folks. I live only a couple miles from Brian's shop; he has driven with me up to the house before to get hoses measurements correct, ect. Not many shops will do that.
