Freeware Office suite software

I tried Open Office briefly probably in the 90's and found it quite similar to MS Office. If I needed a suite on a PC I'd give it serious consideration.

I only very occasionally need a spreadsheet or word processor and am not into shelling out for each and every upgrade which has all sorts of new features which I don't need. It's Open Office for me.

The company I work for has an IT guy who loves to cheap out on us.

....have been using LibreOffice. While I haven't personally used it, the guys who do use it every day spend most of their time complaining about it not working right (won't open, freezes for no reason, etc.). I've watched it go bad on a couple of occasions

Libre Office is a derivative of Open Office. There really isn't much difference between them, and they are both reliable. If you are used to MS, you'll find Open/Libre Office to be different enough to be annoying, but you get used to it.

If google docs is working for you why change? The only issue would be that if you have no internet connection then you can't use it.

I would say a majority of said stupidity is driven by managements ideas to continue to reduce IT budgets in to dust and not give any choice. Ive seen this happen in numerous companies, big to small.

That said, Ive also seen some groups within IT make some pretty dumb choices on products and services when they've been given carte blanch spending.
