I would like to hear some opinions on what the oil change frequency should be on low use small engines. I have heard that oil becomes contaminated with moisture over a period of time. If that is the case wouldn稚 the moisture evaporate the when the engine reaches operating temperature? I have also heard some say that oil becomes acidic over time. If that is the case why do we not hear calls to change fluids in transmissions and differentials on an annual schedule?

I have a trim mower, water pump, and a JD212 that I only use in the spring to roll the lawn. These engines probably get less than three hours use per year. The oil always looks like new. Do they really need an annual oil change?

I try to do once a year changes but my small engines get more use than 3 hours. Some equipment gets two changes like the wood splitter and 4 wheeler.

I have gotten bad on this class of short run time engines for sure. I know it is 5 years sometimes.

all my small engines. lawnmowers, tiller, pressure washers,4 wheelers, generators, tractor and diesel truck get yearly changes.Only about 1000 miles on my truck in a year.I do oil analysis on my diesel truck and am good for yearly changes

I try to do it yearly and most get done, but some get "missed" and go 2 years.

I change the Oil, Oil Filter, and Air Filter on my Craftsman Riding Mower once a year, right before mowing season starts. I also lubricate it and check to make sure everything is tight. I check the battery also.

If the oil hasn't gone dark, I don't worry about it for 2 years anyway. I live in a dry climate & moisture isn't much of a issue.

I've always wondered myself...

On my truck it is every 2500 miles which is once a year.

I have a neighbor with a Troy rototiller he bought new in the 70's and uses it each spring... he has NEVER changed the oil... makes sure it is topped off and lubricates the linkages... just never changed the oil...

My luck it would seize or something.

I've always thought I could tell by the look and smell if time to change. Some small engine or even unused cars go for 5 yrs or more.
