This reminds me that I need to talk to my neighbor about using my posthole digger. Since I split my time between SC & DC, my neighbor watches my place and has use of my stuff (except tractors). He's thinking of putting in some fence and wanted to use my digger. I told him sure, but don't know if he's ever used one before or not. Think I'll give him a call.

I think things like this is why Kubota is moving toward electric PTO switches like on my GL40. To shut it off all you need to do is tap it. I'm guessing well start seeing PTO EMO switches near the PTO in another few years. I hope he recovers from this.

I dunno what an EMO switch is - maybe it's a panic switch? Maybe a big red panic button should be right there on the back of the tractor!

Of course, nobody's supposed to be anywhere near the rotating PTO ...

Also of course, there could be a big red panic button, & it could still be out of reach.

Wait! It could be voice-activated!! Yell, & it turns off! Of course, some people wouldn't be able to yell.

Just can not save everybody from everything.

My cousin got his long pony tail caught in the drive shaft on his skidder.

He lives.

He also has a wicked sense of humor.

When I asked him how it happened all he said was, "You know, it's amazing how fast you can run through the woods while holding your face on with both hands." And then he laughed.

Coldrider... Good point about long hair.

I remember a new machine operator in a factory getting her hair caught in a machine. It ripped a quarter sized piece of scalp out while banging her head against the frame. She was lucky ...

I had to educate my wife about rings and machinery. I don't wear a wedding or any other ring for safety.

Many of our spouses don't have any idea about machinery. It's up to us to keep kids and other machine ignorant people safe in spite of themselves.

50 years ago our hired man came walking into the yard in just his boots, shorts and his shirt. Turns out he got caught in the PTO on the PT swather! Ripped his blue jeans right off him! He was lucky to be alive and even luckier to be unhurt, considering they were NEW blue jeans!

Hopefully your friend recovers. I know several people hurt with PTO's including my dad.

Dad was 15 and using an Allis Chalmers WD pulling a wagon in the winter. He went to get off the tractor and his boot strap snagged on the PTO rod. This was just a little rod that you pulled up on to turn the PTO on next to the shifter. This also tripped him up so he jumped down the back to get his feet under himself. When he hit the ground his feet slipped on ice. He tried to catch himself on the step on the back of the tractor right over the PTO. His right hand missed the step and hit the turning PTO. This spun the leather mitten off hand with the exception of his thumb. It ripped his thumb from his hand. He since then has 3 fingers, and his index finger was removed and turned to be a thumb.

So even just a bare power shaft can be a danger.

I was around 14 or 15 and witnessed my uncle get caught in a pto, He was lucky though, It stripped his coveralls off his body in a split second but he managed to grip the fenders and brace himself until the driver was able to shut it off. I'll tell you though it has made me one safe minded person my whole life and probably allowed me to size up situations and change them long before things got risky. That silver lining thing.

I was about the same age when a similar thing happened to my uncle. He was wearing a sweat shirt top and a old unbuttoned flannel shirt top over it. Reached down next to a running pto shaft on the forage harvester and it caught the flannel shirt and ripped it off of him in a split second. If the shirt was new it would have dragged him into it.

My uncle looked up and laughed (nervous type laugh) and knew how lucky he was.

Like yourself I never forgot it. I welcome all those hated safety sensors and such on tractors.
