I think you or he messed that up, Jonsered sell Husqy's just rebadged. Stihl is a completely separate operation! All 3 are excellent saws and make saws all the way from entry level to pro. Especially in the 45-55 cc range each manufacturer has a range of different quality models for all users. In the bigger sizes (70+cc) it is all pro saws.

We have been in our place almost 6 years and I still dig up "stuff". I don't know how, but it seems that trash will work it's way to the top for years.

Chain saw: I live in East Texas and the biggest industry here is logging. Virtually every person I see that works in the woods uses Stihl chain saws so I bought a Stihl. I have seen a few Husky's, but not many.

One bit of advice: The Stihl I bought has an adjusting mechanism that does not use a wrench ("Quick Chain Adjuster"). It looked good in the store but I really don't like it. Would prefer the style where you use the provided wrench to loosen 2 bolts and turn a screw to tighten the chain. The "tool less" feature is impossible to use with gloves on gets quite a bit of the bar oil on it so it is messy to work with.

Buy a couple of extra chains when you buy the saw. If a chain gets dull in the middle of a bunch of cutting you can change chains faster than you can resharpen one.

I have 3 chains, change them out and file them later in the garage where I have better light and can take my time to get them sharp. I put a piece of 1 X 2 or plywood standing upright in my vise and drape the chain over it where I can see the tooth I am sharpening. Easier and better job than trying to sharpen it on the saw. Wear gloves when sharpening!

After sharpening them a few times myself I take them back to the dealer and have him sharpen them to compensate for the variations I get when I file them by hand. Chains will also stretch after being used for several hours and may need to have a link removed when you can no longer get them tight with the bar adjustment at it's longest setting.

Good article on chain saw sharpening.

Oops, I think I didn't make myself clear. A few posts up I tried to say that the dealer sells Huskys but said buy a Stihl when we need one. He did not say that there was any relationship between Stihl and Husky. The point I tried to make was that he was saying buy your chainsaw elsewhere since we don't sell the one you need! We have a Stihl and a Homelite now, the Stihl is better than "consumer" grade but the Homelite is box store stuff, but small and light.

We do have two Husky trimmers (235's) and they are great, so I do like Husky for some things.

Around here, still a logging area, I see a lot of Stihl saws and dealers. Assume it is more than just habit.

Also, I do hope that no one as taken my comments, joking ones /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif, wrong. I think it is great that someone felt that a smaller tractor would work and was willing to post it. Since most of us think with other parts than our brain, it is nice to see someone actually thinking.

I do see more people trying to talk themselves into bigger tractors than they need, and indeed I might have done that. Or at least my dealer and wife did!! I did say that I was the one arguing for smaller... But I did think it was a little funny, as well as great that I had that comment since we do seem to try to talk ourselves into more than we need.

(Yeah, I confess I bought a Model 66comp which is more than I really "need" to carry but less than a .500 magnum... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif) So in a lot of things I do go over kill in a not so logical way. Heck, if we all went minimum we would have few fun cars or trucks or airplanes. Defying logic brings us Ferraris, Jaguars, Kingairs, Hummers and so on! The fun things! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Mike, I just got my L3130 yesterday and haven't had a chance to play to any real degree so I'm still more on the statistics stage of the buy than the real world. Here's some statistical stuff etc. while it's fresh:
The front loader jump to the larges LA853 doesn't occur till you move up to the L4330. The 3130 and 3430 are the same machines different motor of course and the 3830 has a a wider stance by about 6" and an inch or two longer wheelbase. They all three take the same mid sized LA723 FEL so no advantage to the 3830 there. That loader which is rather beefy for a tractor this size. All weigh about the same and Kubota must have a scale problem cause the 3830 is listed as the lightest of the three. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Everything from the 3130 to the 5030 take the same two hoes. If you opt for the larger BH90 on the 3130 or the 3430 though you need the mid size LA723 FEL. The smaller LA513 is insufficient for counterbalance on the two smallest models. You can do a BH90 hoe and small 513 FEL with the 3830 but that wouldn't seem a sensible combo. If you want the LA 853 FEL you need to step up to the L4330. Believe it or not, the entire L series is rated for the same 72" finishing mower but there would be considerable performance difference on a bush hog from the top to bottom of the L series line.

I bought mine for primarily tree/ stump work at the house and a sizable cut and fill operation on my grades. I opted for the LA723 and the BH 90. Per above it is 6" more narrow than the 3830 but it is still incredibly more stable (laterally) than most industrial hoes I'm familiar with. You know in the first minutes that it would take some real effort, and stupidity, to roll it even with the hoe on and the higher center of gravity, and I have serious elevation changes on just over 3 acres that test this a bit. Wouldn't be prudent to be too sure though.

I's go for the 3830. My first impression pulling a moderate grade in mid range was "this thing could use a little more torque". It gave me the hydraulic stall feel above half way down on the pedal. Don't know how much difference that actually makes in that situtation but it wouldnt hurt to have a little more umph. Reminds me of Deere's old tendancy to under power their smaller tractors. All three have the same flow rating on the hydraulics.

Better get out of here.... buy the 3830 for your described use, it's only 2,500.00 more /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Best of Luck.
