I recently scrapped an old bale loader the previous owner left behind and as I was about to load the the main carriage the idea of instead using it to mount a 3pth backblade to popped into my mind. There are no longer any wheels on this frame. I used one axle stub to repair a broken spindle on one of my tractors some time ago. I'm thinking I could just mount a rear axle from a parts van, position the blade halfway between it and the hitch and use the 3pth on whichever of my tractors I'm pulling it with to regulate the blade's bite.

My question is: is there something I'm overlooking that will prevent this from working as I hope? Sorry, I don't have pictures to to demonstrate what I'm talking about. This chromebook is fussy about allowing the photos I wanted to upload to it. Too proprietary if you ask me!!

sounds like you want a pull behind road grader.
I made one. Works well.

The blade doesn't angle, so I have to use a different drag to add some crown to the road.

The pull-behind road grader is exactly what I want/need. Thats a real nice grader you built from materials on hand!! As for crowning the road, I won't have a problem since I can angle the blade either way. I can also reverse it although I have never had the occasion to. My intention is to build the backblade onto the framework in such a way as to be able to remove it and use it as I do now. Also, I want to build the mounting block of one of the category #1 3pth pins so I can raise or lower it for even more crown control. One of my projects for this rig is improving the landscaping of our yard. It has far too many ruts and low spots.

This sounds like what you are trying to do. It uses your rear blade or box blade.

Thats close, Bruce. What I propose to do differently is that the backblade I already have, will not be altered in any way while mounting to the old loader carrier, at least not right away. What could get altered down the pike is a hydraulic blade angle swing changer. I also noted that the wheels are close to the blade. I plan to position my blade well forward of the wheels. If I don't, the raising and lowering of the 3pth to control blade height will not work very well.

I just realized I'd better make sure the wheels are spaced properly. I sure don't want one of them tracking on top of the spill from the blade! The axle I thought of using probably won't do....

Make some wings like I did.

OK, I had not noticed them the first time I looked. They seem to work well on your rig. I wonder how that works when the blade is angled. Would extra drag be created at the swung-back end causing extra sideways force? Also, there would still be some spill off the end of the swung back portion of the blade. I'd rather not have a wheel riding up on that so I'll look into using the front wheel spindles off that van rather than the rear axle. The weight might have been useful but I can make that happen some other way if needed!:)

If you can find a front axle from a truck or something, you could turn the wheels to one side and the whole trailer would swing out to one side. That would take care of blade angle, and reach the ditch without having to drive in the weeds.
Just a thought.

Hmm.... Food for thought, thanks!
