Do I need to remove the front wheels to do this? The TC-45 manual makes it look like I'd want to to get at the final reduction gear case but I'm a little tentative about doing anything like that. Is it even necessary?

Thanks,

Matt

Yeah, I suppose a verb would have been a good idea to put in my post. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I need to change the fluid in the final reduction gear case and it looked in the manual like they'd taken the wheel off to do so. I guess it was just a 'cutaway' view of the area. I looked at my tractor and it seems like I wouldn't need to take the wheels off to do this after all.

It's probably easier with the wheel off. On My TC18, the wheels are so small, you don't really have access & need to take them off.

I was thinking that if I did take the wheels off to do it, I could use the loader with the bucket on it to pick the front end off the ground a bit and do one wheel and then put that one back on and do the other side. I don't have nearly the experience most folks have with tractors here on this website so I'm a little tentative to try things. My wife's dad was the expert but he'll be gone a year next month and so I end up asking my novice questions here.

My loader will definitely pick up the front end - surprised me the first time I accidently did it! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

See any problems with using it as jack?

Thanks,
Matt

You can use the loader to lift the wheel off the ground But use a jackstand or blocking under the axle before you remove the wheel.
My advise is DO NOT TRUST THE LOADER TO HOLD UP THE TRACTOR when working around or under it.

I concur with DK35vince. Just think what would happen if the hydraulics started to give way. Serious damage to the front end of your tractor and/or worse...a major injury to yourself. The leading cause of death in North America from an occupation standpoint is farming & that's directly related to farming machinery. Should be OK if you block the wheels & use jackstand.

Always think SAFETY when working with your Tractor & keep in the back of your mind the consequences if things go wrong.

When I changed the oil in the front diff and at the wheels, I raised the front end with the FEL, put jack stands (one on each end) under the axle and lowered the front end so it was resting on the jack stands. I took both wheels off and took my time draining, refilling and inspecting things in safety.

You definitely want to take the wheels off. I concur with everyone who says to use the FEL as a jack and then block-up or use jackstands under the axle. With the wheel off, it's a simple job. Taking the wheel off is also a lot simpler with an air compressor and an impact wrench. . . just another excuse to buy more tools. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
