front chain clearance

I have rear chains on my 2230 and they worked well so far this winter. I bought a set of front chains from tirechains.com and installed them an hour ago for use later tonight/tomorrow. I noticed the inner links graze that gold color piece on the end of the axel when the steering wheel is turned way right or left. Any solution to this or is it normal? Maybe I should just scrap the whole front chain thing altogether?

Scraping the front chains IS a good idea. If you can't get there with rear ones you should not go.

Well, I got turfs all around and found they didn't have the same traction as the rear chains provided. Particularly in the real deep stuff we had here in NJ in January. So, I thought that adding front chains would be that much better. It sounds like I may have wated $50 on them. Wouldn't be the first time I wasted a Grant, nor the last.

loosen the inside connection of the chain by one link and tighten the outside more. Also use some rubber bungee cords to keep the chains tensioned. This will resolve your problem. If you install them properly, they will not interfere with anything in the front end. You just have to make sure that they are tight after using them for a few minutes and every thing stretches out and settles in where it will remain. This is problematic- take my word for it. You might think you have them missing all the way around but as you work the tractor, they will move and rub again.
Buy a set of bar tires/rims for the front for winter/mud. They are the same size and rolling radius as the turfs and the difference is amazing. They can be run mixed. Cost right around $100 for the second set.

JUNKMAN: i think a lot of our fellow TBN'S do not realize that at one time chains were quite popular for cars here in the NORTHEAST. Last car i used them on was my 55 DeSoto. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
