Front end went clunk

/ Front end went clunk #11
Mornin Phil,
Thanks for the reply. On my MF 1040 I drained both front reduction units and also the front pinion housing, yeah three different gear lube resevoirs, just in the front housing. One front reduction unit had a mix of water and gear lube /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif The previous owner left the machine outside most of the time /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Im happy to have a barn to keep the tractor in now, even if it isnt mine /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Glad to hear your up and running!

Was it like an automotive differential where you have to adjust the gear contact by adding/subtracting shims when replacing ring and/or pinion?

Anyway, I'm glad you're up and running and hope you have the problem solved for good, where it's not a case of something more subtle like a component being bent or out of adjustment that caused the failure.

Yes it is very much like a rear axle. You do adjust the end play with shims. The biggest differance is the crush nut you adjust the tension on the 2 internal bearings 5 inch pds. or 11 to 13lbs at rotation startup. Twist a string around the end of the shaft and use a small scale. Then pull mine is set at 12.
