PaulB - Could it be some sort of Japanese-to-English perversion of the word "transmission"?

The subject of which oil comes in the tractors is very confusing to me. My dealer tells me that the oil they sell for the engine is branded Kubota, but made for them by a U.S. Oil company. The oil filled with at the factory is different. The oil in the front axle and transmission (geared), I believe to be simply UDT. This does not appear to be anything special at all and is the same as John Deere and Most other Name Brand Manufactures (even blue ones) sell for their tractors. The only REAL requirement is that it must be specified as compatable with Brakes being run in the Hydraulic Fluid. Pretty simple so far. The book recommends Super UDT, but for a gear tractor, the dealer says he has never seen one with super UDT in the transmission or front axle. So Why the Kubota recommendation?

I am equally not convinced that Super UDT is as good as plain old UDT here in North Central Texas. That is why I was interested when you said you drained Super UDT out of your tractor.

PaulB--No I did not change the oil in the front axle. If I wait till I get the 300 hours that they call for, I'll be a lot older man than I am now.
Wen --Never even gave a thought about the oil being different from what they recommend.
If anyone else did a 50 hour change on the transaxle, and drained that front case, I'd like to hear how they know they have oil in it.

Obviously, this isn't going to help you, but for what it's worth, here it is. On all the L-series tractors I've had, there was a bolt under each wheel hub - you remove the bolts, let it drain, put them back in, remove the fill plug bolt and the check hole bolt, put oil in the fill plug hole until it runs out the check hole, then replace the fill plug and check hole bolts. That's it. Clearly, it's not that simple on the B-series?

Bud - I went out and crawled under my tractor, and I see EXACTLY what you are saying - there does not appear to be a connection between the rear drive and the "front mission", so here is what I did. I pulled the 14mm drain plug for a second, and super UDT flowed forth. I know it was Super UDT because I drained it at 50 hours, and added it myself. The only place I added fluid was at the yellow plug in the back, so I must say that by definition there is a way for fluid to get from the rear to the front. I looked all around and all I can say is this - the hydraulic block that diverts fluid to the front loader controls bolts to the side of the "front mission case". I wonder if on the back side of that plate there is a connection to the "front mission"? I have never looked at the back of one of these plates so I do not know if they are just a solid piece of metal or if fluid can get from the plate to the case. If so, that is our answer I would guess. The other idea I have is that the hydraulic pump itself bolts on very near to the "front mission", so is it possible that there is a direct connection from the pump? Any dealers out there know the answer??
Mark - I was misinterpreting what Bud was saying. Like you, I thought he was talking about the front axle when he said front drive, but on the B series at least there is a box, refered to as the front mission case in the manual, that obvioiusly holds hydraulic fluid, but which has no OBVIOUS connection to the rear drive , which is where you add the fluid, and where the dipstick is. Is there a similar aerrangement on the L series, and if so, how DOES fluid get there? Maybe it is from the power beyond block like I surmised above??

Ah, so... So I see...

Yes, there's a 'mission' case on the L-series, too, but it's generally called the 'transmission' case. It's connected internally to the differential case - in fact they form one big case.

Why do I have EDIT in front of reply on all of my posts.
Being I know nothing about this computer, I need a little help in changing my Email address. I went to a new server.
The old one was so bad that sometimes I could not get on line for days.
Thanks Bud

Oh well, I've stayed out of this discussion long enough./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif The B2710 manual shows those "mission" cases as "Front transmission case" and "Rear transmission case" and I, too, overlooked the front transmission case when I did the 50 hour service./w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

And as for the front axle case, a right and left drain plug, one under each front wheel hub, just as on Mark's L-series, but a yellow "filling plug with dipstick" on the top right side of the axle case. The manual says to fill it to the appropriate level on the dipstick, and after 10 minutes, check it again (guess they knew some of us were going to use the heavier gear oil instead of one of the UDTs)./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Bud, when you view one of your own posted messages, that EDIT is there because you can do just that; you can change your own messages even after they've been posted, you just can't change anyone elses.

For the other question, try clicking on "Edit Profile" on that top bar, make the changes you want, and click on "Submit" at the bottom of the page.

Of course I don't know much about computers either, but I think that'll work./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Oh, so you got a dipstick with yours, eh? How fancy... /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
