Re: front mounted snow blower Q\'s

Hey, I'm looking at doing the same thing at some point. I plan to use the same system I am working on to power a belly mower on my YM1110D. Actually, if you wanted to run it off a front pto, you could just run the belt around two pulleys to direct it forward, then around two more to direct it up and over the pulley on the blower. This is how I have seen it done. Unfortunately, this isn't an option for me now since I moved the front axle forward 5" to get a 4' belly mower under the tractor. The axle now obstructs the belt path unless I move the clutch way out front.

I will power both from the rear pto with a system of pulleys and belts. Hopefully I'll get a chance to work on it this winter. In the mean time, I still have the bigger tractor with a hydraulic front blade for this winter.

Re: front mounted snow blower Q\'s

Yanmar sold a front mount blower kit. It used a rear blower mounted on the front . I have owner's/parts manuals for it.

Re: front mounted snow blower Q\'s

Thanks Leonard.

A note to any member that may be viewing the thread. I noticed this morning that skin's snowblower turns in the standard direction. Please remember that my blower is reverse rotation. When I post pics later, this will be important as I will not be reversing the rotation. The setup that Skinman has does reverse the rotation. Where? It's in the chain drive mechanism. If you look at the drive pulley, you'll see that the pulley is on the outside of the chain. The driven pulley is on the inside, thus the direction is reversed!

Re: front mounted snow blower Q\'s

Good catch on the rotation. I never paid attention to that - blower came with the tractor. Pics! We want some pics! Take some as you go along so others can see how you did it.

Re: front mounted snow blower Q\'s

Ahhh...
An interesting point. However Cord, your snowblower is actually the "standard" rotation for a front mount snow blower. Skinman's is "standard" rotation for a 3pt snow blower. I had never considered this. I used to have a small 26" snowblower with a 5hp tecumseh engine, and it's rotation was clockwise as viewed from the rear, the same as yours. All lawn tractor snowblowers are clockwise due to the rotation of the vertical shaft engine being clockwise as viewed from above.

If you choose to use an electric clutch for a front pto, it will require 4 idler/tensioner pulleys for two belt direction changes. One pair below the clutch pulley, and one pair on the blower below the impeller drive pulley.

P.S. Belts and pulleys are the most inexpensive way to go. The rotation direction is correct for a front pto using belts. If you choose to use a driveshaft from the rear, then the rotation direction is correct. However, belts from the rear, are not the correct direction.

Re: front mounted snow blower Q\'s

I'm going to run a driveshaft from the rear pto. This will allow me to use a front pto in the future for some yet to be determined need. It'll also allow the power to be transmitted with out any belt slippage problems due to moisture. The only thing that I don't like is the ground clearance with the driveshaft under the axle. These 1110's sit pretty close to the ground and that shaft is bound to get dinged some where along the way.

Re: front mounted snow blower Q\'s

Do you intend this to be a standard pto in the front? I had thought about this as well some time ago and even bought some of the stuff to do it. That really would be neat, but remember that you will have to reverse rotation for the front pto to be "standard" rear like operation. It would then be cool to put a front 3pt hitch on. Then you could run a finish mower or any other 3pt implement up front, though you might want (or have) to change the 3pt and gearbox to the rear side of the mower.

I really don't think belt slip would be a problem even in a wet environment. Almost all front mounted snow blowers for lawn tractors are belt driven.

Re: front mounted snow blower Q\'s

As much as I would like to, it won't be a standard pto. I have a couple of attachments left over from my dad's Gravely tractor. If I set the pto up like Gravely had it for their rider tractors I'll be able to use the old walk behind attachments. For right now, that would be limited to a 42" sickle bar mower and 38" snow blower that I already have. I could see myself buying (but never using) the Gravely power broom. All of these attachments are reverse rotation.

Re: front mounted snow blower Q\'s

Ok, some information for anybody that may be following this thread. I have a local bearing supply store that has a software program for power transmission. Now this blower is going on a pretty small tractor. The center to center distance between the pto and the drive shaft will be around 10". Unfortinatly, due to the limited belt coverage on a small pulley the only way a V belt driven shaft was going to transmit 10hp was with a tripple groove pulley. This would not be a problem with larger pulleys. We looked into a cog type belt but the cost went through the roof. I ended up going with a chain drive.
