I am weighing my options for a finish mower. I already have two 60 inch mowers and need an additional one of at least 84 inches. I've ruled out spending 40k for a self contained wide area rotary and have decided to use my tractor to pull one. My question is, can I push one with my existing tractor or can I buy a tractor with a front pto on it? I've never heard of a way to put a front pto on a tractor but I know they exist. I have a Ford (New Holland) 1620 (too small) 1920, and two 2120s. I also have a David Brown (Case) 990 and a Case 585.

The 1920 should run a 7' rear finish mower. The 2120 deffinately will.

Some tractors have a front crank driven belt pto with electric engagement for MMM decks.. etc.. not sure what the NH options are.. but will a rear mower work for you?

Hydraulic motor... Mount it on the front of the tractor, and run it off either tractor hydraulkics or a pump on the main pto.

that's how the mowers and other implements run on skidsteers and track-loaders.

Most Kioti tractors have a splined crank off the engine that may be used as a front PTO, however, this would operate at engine RPM, and one would need to fabricate the proper belt and pulley system to get the proper 540 PTO speed for a mower.

Robert,

I wish I were more mechanically inclined. But I guess I was right when I figured there would be guys here who know a lot more about this stuff than I do. Seems to me your idea would work. Any guesses on how much additional horsepower would be lost going through a pump? I would have to have the 4wd and only my 2120s have that and potentially enough hp so I would need to figure if they have enough hp or if I need a bigger tractor.

A NH 2120 is a brute.. it's easilly in the TC 4X class.

The hyd pump/motor will be the most loss method. Crank driven belt system will be less loss.. possibly a little more work to fab up though to get ratio's correct, unless there is a factory kit available from NH.

My old dozer uses a front crank PTO driven hydraulic motor to power all the hydraulics. Works great until you need to change a fan belt.

With the implement out front being raised and lowered with the FEL, I would be leary of and PTO driven implement and its alignment issues. Go hydraulic. Most skid steer hydraulic systems are quite huge since the hydraulic pump propels the machine and the implement. You see these skid steers putting 80+ HP into nothing but a huge hydraulic pump. The implements designed for a skid steer will consume huge hydraulic power that your tractor may not be capable of.

I ran into this while investigating the rotary brush chipper/shreader/destruction machine that actually consumes any wood material in it's path. Like beg trees and stumps. It even grinds these things below grade. Great, but it needed a ridiculous amount of hydraulic power.

I havn't a clue as to what you are refering to? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I don't think anyone is talking about a u-jointed drive shaft driven implement driven off a front pto, and mounted to a loader... If they were.. I missed that part big time.

All I saw was front crank pto setups for things like mowers.. or perhaps a snow blower.. spreader.. etc.. all mounted stuff...

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here.

That may be my mistake, I assumed these things are mounted to the FEL and then some crazy PTO shaft leading to the crank snout.

You are right. I wasn't referring to any FEL attachment. I'm thinking strictly of a mounted rigid attachment that could possibly be driven by either hydraulics or a front end pto. It seems this isn't something any manufacturer offers, so it has to be a homemade project. And to me that seems crazy. Every park, school district, municipality, and golf course in the country needs an out front rotary AND already has a utility tractor. Why not mate the two?
