Hi, I have seen a pounder made out of a front tine rototiller. They took off the tines and put a pulley with a rope put tiller in gear weight box went up take it out of gear weight box free falls . They put 8" to 10" round poles for dock pilings, 4 to 6 foot in the ground with it. Not the fastest but got the job done and it would be cheap to build.

We used to build log splitters like this: Vertical I beam that mounted on the three point hitch. Really, you have side to side and front to back adjustment on your three point. Run your PTO shaft back to a jackshaft with two bearings on it. Make another shaft with a winch drum on it made out of pipe, with drum sides cut out of plate steel. Belt drive from the PTO shaft to the winch drum shaft. Leave the belt a little loose and use a tensioning idler pulley that is hand operated. Run your cable up and over a pulley atop the I Beam and down to your weight. Your weight should slide on the I beam like a log splitter does. Now, with the tractor running, pull your handle, tighten the belt, winch drum turns, take in cable, weight is almost to the top, release the handle, weight free falls to strike the object. The old log trucks with cable loaders operate this way. It is sorta the same system. Simple, but yet effective. The ones we had were open, but I advise to guard this thing well, as moving parts are dangerous. Also, make kind of a cage around the winch drum because if you forget to hold the handle, you may get a backlash when the weight bottoms out. After you learn how to handle it, you won't do the backlash, you will know just when to hit the handle after a free fall. Pound away.

A friend told me of a rather easy means of making a pounder. The mast has a slot in it where a small tire (like on the front of a riding mower) would contact the inner mast with the weight. The tire can be run with a small hyd. motor connected to the tractor hyd. system. The tire and motor are hinged and spring loaded so when pulled down contacts the inner mast and lifts it. once up tension is relieved and the inner mast would free fall. Press the tire against the mast again and up she goes. Repeat as necessary. I thought if the inner mast had a lever attached so that when the mast got to a certain height it would force the tire away releasing it force and allow the mast to drop. That way you wouldn't always have to watch how high it was raised.

such great advice on the posts about the pounder. I didnt realize I had two going,, That was my concern I guess , the rapid dispersal of the oil upon the downward force of the pounding implement,, would a larger return line help with that??,, and would the force of the oil thru the cylinder rupture or hurt the cylinder gaskets at all??

I actually remebered I had a HUGE log splitter I had given to me that has a close to 10 foot I beam and a long ram,,, even comes with its own hydro pump,, I am thinking on making this the basis of my unit,,[ when it warms up a bit,,,] I thnk I can use the plate that is used for pushing the log thru as the tamper end, I will have to reverse the workings on it, but I think I have a good start,, I will try to get some pics when I can get up the part of the property where it sits,,

There really does seem to be a lot of info and people willing to help on here,, keep it up, its nice to find a place where the advice flows,, , you can take bits and pieces of each post an apply it, thansk again pat
