John Deere 790
We're nearing the end of our tractor search. The 790 looks to be the one. As much as I'd love to have a front end loader put on it I'm not sure that will be able to happen (yet). If we don't get the loader at first I want some weights on the front for when/if we end up pulling a disk or rotary cutter up one of the few hills on our property.

So, I'm still new to this and just found out they actually make weights for this purpose. Could you give me a rough idea of how much weight I would need to add to the front end? We'd be pulling a 5 foot cutter and disk of the same size. Also, any idea of what the weights would cost roughly? And would the JD dealership have them or would I need to use another source?

Thanks guys.

You can put 5 of the 42 lb suitcase weights on the front. You'd want all 5.
They're not cheap...about $2.00 per pound, if I recall.

There was a link posted here once with an address/phone number to some place that sold these things used. Hopefully, someone will post that again

I picked mine up from the dealer. Can't remember the cost but you can find them in the Deere site under the configurator. Roy is right, the standard bracket holds five. You can get bracket extensions for more but I doubt you'll need it. I pull a five foot light duty cutter and the five are fine. I like the Deere weights as they are easy on, easy off and the handles are recessed for no pinched fingers! I have a FEL as well but I like to cut without it. My land is pretty rough and the FEL bounces around an awful lot. Besides, it feels kind of "sporty" without the FEL every now and then /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

John Deere also has 70 lb suit case weights that will work on the 790.

I've got the Deere 42 pounders on my 670, but I don't think I paid near $2 per pound...I believe the five of them ran me right at $200. My tractor is a bit smaller than yours, and I've yet to need the extensions for the extra weight up front. The 550 tiller is HEAVY, but 5 weights keep it down in the front well.

About the loader, if you cant swing it now at least get the loader joystick and hyd. outlets so down the road the loader wont be as big of a purchase.

If the delear does not have the suitcase weigthts have him order them but save freight charges by having them delivered on his next monthly truck

I also use 5 42lb. wieghts. If getting Fel is not an option now, then make sure it's set up for it later. If your not getting it becauseyou dont know if you can justify the money...... I cant tell you how many people I have talked to that have fel now and say it's the tool they use the most and find it to be useful for things they never even thought of.
