Front wheel seals

I just got a box from the dealer to replace the front wheel seals and bearings on my 1500D.

There are an alarming number of parts in the box. Am I getting in over my head, or will it be fairly straightforeward when I open uo the wheels?

I am very good at turning wrenches on the power plant of a nuclear submarine, but I haven't done much serious work on vehicles before. I am wondering if I will be OK, or if I should pay a mechanic?

It is not complex, but it does take a mechanical inclination. I would suggest you call your dealer (wasn't it RCO?). We would, and have, put a mechanic on the phone with the customer for general instructions, and the parts book gives a pretty clear diagram of the assembly.

Agreed, call them, RCO, they say that they have a f/t mechanics on staff to help out with this kinda stuff...

btw, I'm like you, I can read and understand stuff, work on highly complex and abstract technical topics, but when it comes to hands on mechanical it gets thin fast.. don't worry thou, that feeling diminishes with each accomplishment! Good luck, buddy. -arthr

You might check in with Kendall ( PWGflyboy ). I think he just changed the front seals out on his 1510.

The 1500 and 1510 are completely different assuming they are 4wd.

John at RCO gave me the phone number of the mechanic to call. I am just worried that I could end up in a position where the tractor is not movable and not completable by me.

I have all of this week off so I'm about to dive in.......

If you've got a parts book to look at the assembly, a competent mechanic to consult, a reasonable assortment of metric sockets and wrenches and the other usual stuff, and are even moderately mechanically inclined it will simply be something new for you, not even close to "incompletable".

FWIW...until 10 years or so ago I was the anti-mechanic, the Darth Vader of shop work, a wrench's #1 enemy....I could screw up an oil change just by being in the room. And yet with all that going for me, I have done front seals & collars myself after watching it be done a couple of times.

Make sure you have all your parts. We will not consider replacing an axle seal without replacing the seal collar it rides on. Parts book will show you all these. You'll feel much more in control once you're done.

I don't have a parts book. Does anyone have a diagram they can post?
