It does appear that the bolts are loose. I just wonder if it came that way, or if the bolts just loosened up? Are there lockwashers on the underside?Lesson learned yesterday..
Don't beat on this unit/make sure gearbox bolts are tight!![]()
Is it possible, that with all the rust showing underneath the paint, it might have already been cracked? Or maybe it had some stress fractures? If it really did crack when you beat on it, you must have really been pounding on it!

My fault for sure. This RC 1072 is only rated up to 1" stuff. This unit has seen it's share of 4" :ashamed:
You are an honest man! How many seasons have you used that cutter and what is the "duty rating" on it? If you have been beating on it for 4-5 years then it really is a tough cutter for standing up to that stuff.
Edit: Glad to hear it was a relatively cheap fix.
I have a Frontier 1072 rotary cutter bought new 3 yrs ago but use it mainly for cutting field grass and light brush -- still looks new when pressure washed. Will have to check the bolts for tightness. Good to hear yours was fixable w/o too much expense.
My beater cutter is a Bush Hog 60" Squealer that has more weld and reinforcement steel on it than you can imagine. It is about 25 yrs old and still runs well. Had to replace the blades a few times -- don't think it will ever die.
