I am in need of a better box blade. I have been using the one I bought with my 4720 which is a BB2072 I think. It is only 72" wide. I am thinking of getting a Frontier BB1184. I like it is welded construction, floating tailgate, 84" wide, and pretty heavy at 739lb.

Comments?

I would be worried the BB1184 would be too light for the 5525. It looks like you could pretzel that thing pretty easy with a 5525 if you got the blade hooked or caught on anything. I would probably start with the BB2284, but ideally, for the 5525, I would want a BB3384 - if the hinged tailgate was not a must have. Hhydaulically operated scarifiers are nice!

The 1184 was heaiver than thew 2284 weight wise I thought.

How much should I expect for pay for these different models. Maybe I should go big. Go big or go home.

I think the hinged tailgate would be nice for spreading dirt. The biggest use would be for ballast on the rear for FEL work. Also, I need to smooth out my roads, trails, etc on the ranch.

Hydraulic sacrificers would be way cool.

Prices?

Thanks,
D.

The BB1184 wieghs in at 739 while the BB2284 tips the scales at 1005 lbs. The end plates are thicker on the 2284 and the box has a little better design. The hitch on the 2284 is a Cat I or II as opposed to only a Cat I on the 1184. Just for the hitch alone, I would consider the 2284 over the 1184. I pretzeled a 72" box blade with my M6800 by simply backing into a stump that was about 3" in diameter at idle.

I've never used a hinged tailgate... I would probably go with a hydraulic toplink and the hydraulic scarifiers instead. :D But then again, I don't know what I'm missing with a hinged tailgate.

Prices... I am scared to ask! :)

OK - prices:

BB1184 - $937
BB1284 - $4000
BB2284 - $3000
BB3384 - $3700
BB3284 - $2400
BB3296 - $2600
BB2184 - didn't price, not welded on the mast

Which one ya think now?

It is still a tough call... I would lean towards the BB3284 or the BB3384. I think the 3284 might be the best most heavy duty for the price but it doesn't have the high capacity box. If you don't need the high capacity box, I would probably go for it. If I needed the high capacity box, I would probably spend a bit more and get the 3384.

I don't think the 1184 would last long on the 5525.

I have a bush hog mbx84 I bought with the TN75. I think it would work fine for the 5525. Its pretty heavy built. It was less than 1k when bought yr ago. floating tail gate as well. check out the specs vs the frontier.

I hear ya. I guess I am not a serious box blade user. I have never even used my rippers on my existing box blade. My bill is already going to be close to $37K or so, I gotta draw the line somewhere. :)

I'll check it out.

The floating tailgate seems like a must have. I need to do more homework on it.

Thanks,

I've actually given up on box blades. I now use a Reveal 4-n-1 for all my grading, leveling, etc. I also use it for the dressage arena, so it gets some pretty heavy usage several times a week. If you don't use it often or hard, then a lighter one might work. Check out some other brands of box blades too... like the bush hog, etc.

Or maybe just keep using the smaller boxblade on your smaller tractor. :D
