Rotary Cutter Frontier RC2072 -- Major Problems

A MX6 is an expensive heavy duty cutter, so I'd expect that you are going to owe a rather large chunk of $$$$.

Was there a thread a couple months ago about the MX series breaking off at the output shaft and deere wanted $1500 for a new different box to make the repair? Not bashing, I own a MX7 myself. Ken Sweet

Well, I now have a MX6 hooked up to my tractor! Talk about one well thought-out design that appears to be built very strong. I will not know what JD wants as far as the upgrade cost until sometime next week. If it is too high I will bring it back but for now I'm gonna shred the heck out of as much acreage as possible!

The thing that really gets my goat is that if the salesmen over at the dealership really did their job in the beginning I would have purchased the MX6 and not the RC2072 and this thread would likely not exist. However, I am rather frustrated that JD would have a known problem with a product, not advise their customers and expect their dealers to keep pushing it. Yes, this may have been caused by a bad batch of steel and not the design. I guess that is what a company risks when they cut costs but when it bites them in the butt we shouldn't feel sorry for them and they should make it right with their customers.

sounds like a step in the right direction, enjoy!

Spent the afternoon shredding some thick range with the MX6 and I have to say JD hit a home run with this model. The shredder cut the thickest grass, weeds and light brush 100% even when going relatively fast (B2 gear). Even on tight turns the implement tracked well and floated over the contour of the terrain with the superior floating top link design. Additionally, the sloped deck design makes it very easy to clean off the shredder at the end of the day in a few seconds with very few areas that have the potential to hold debris. JD also was nice enough to put a dipstick on the gearbox to make checking oil levels a snap.

I'm very happy for now... Now I wait to see what JD wants as far as $$ for the upgrade.

I have an RC2060 and have bounced it off alot of junk, and it isn't even tweaked. I wonder if JD had a bad batch of soft steel that just happened to hit the load sent to your dealership. Hope it works out for you.

Me too.

Has anyone out there purchased a RC2072 within the past year - year and a half that they are very happy with the dourability of the 3-point hitch? Since several people have posted that they are very happy with their RC2060s I'm wondering if the RC2072 is the only model impacted by the weak steel shipment... If that is the problem.

Another thought that I had was that if my dealer had virtually all of the RC2072s purchased within the last year and a half come back with bent 3point hitches that they may have assembled them incorrectly and overtorqued the bolts or forgot to install a small bushing, etc so that the top link cannot "float."

That ^^^^^ could be the problem. If it can't "Float", it would twist it when you went on uneven ground. I know my 2060 floats, because I watch it on uneven stuff just to see how that linkage works.

Hope you get that MX series for Free! :D

Perhaps there is a parts manual that shows the assembly? (would be nice to have an assembly manual)

So far I have mowed around 10 acres of rough rangeland with the JD MX6 and all I can say is that this piece of equipment is awesome! I can run much faster and get a clean cut even in the thickest grass, weeds and brush.

I have not been able to track down the exact difference in cutting specifications between the Frontier RC2072 and the JD MX6 that would cause such a drastic difference in cutting ability. The only thing that I can somewhat pinpoint is that the blades on the MX6 are 1" wider and the speed of the blades is faster. Perhaps it is the design of the deck - could the shape increase the vacuum which would aid in increasing cutting performance... If anyone knows the exact reason why the cutting performance of the MX6 is so much better than the RC2072 - I would love to know.
