FROPS for doughheads

Tried to park the tractor in the garage with the FROPS up. Doubt that anyone else has ever done this (or will admit to it.) Fortunately going slow and no damage was done. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I know you're not the first to do this, but you're brave enough to admit it /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif I'm lucky that my garage door opening clears my 4310 FROPS by about 4 inches, otherwise I'd have done it too! Glad no serious damage was done.

I'd read where others had done it, /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif so immediately upon delivery I eased up to mine to make sure it cleared and it does by about 1-1/2". If it didn't I'm sure I'd be a member of that club before long /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I've found that the easiest thing to do for me is just close the garage door behind me after taking out the beast. Then, when it's time to park it, I *have* to get off and think about things a bit. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I often take my BH off in the garage and in doing so I lift the ROPS up in the process. This weekend I did hit the ROPS with part of the grarge door opener linkage when moving / realligning the tractor to reattach the BH /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I never install the holding pins in the ROPS for fear of causeing some real damage (should it be possable I make this kind of unthinkable error ). Its ammazing how much trouble you can cause with 32 HP and 6000 pounds /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif. Just as my wife.

I have the taller, folding ROPS on my JD 4200 and have NEVER, EVER hit it on my door. Of course, my door is 12' high. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have, however, managed to knick the doorframe going in and out with my loader bucket, backhoe stabilizer arm, backhoe bucket and at least one tire. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Needless to say, while I can't get the ROPS high enough to do any damage, I've tried to make up for it on the sides where I do have control. If you got by with no real damage done, count yourself lucky and hope your experience will serve as a reminder to not do it again.

It's nothing to be embarrassed about. I'm sure a lot more have done it than will admit it. It's kind of like riding a motorcycle. Oh, you are certainly not the first. In fact I recall reading a thread here many moons ago titled something like "ROPS versus Garage Door."

I haven't done that one (yet), but I have a 4x4 clothesline post to my record from a few years ago. I borrowed my neighbor's JD855 and proceded to drive full tilt right between the posts. He had built the clothesline so well and used such strong wire rope for the lines that it snapped the 4x4 right at the base of the post.

Attached is a picture of my solution for installing & removing the backhoe in my low ceiling garage. I made a block to hold the rops up at a 90 degree angle to the supports. the block is 1 3/8" thick, juct wide enough to fit inside the hinge & I ground a small indentation in it so the pin will hold the block in place.

I had my tractor 10 minutes before I did it. After the JD delivery truck left, I cut a little grass with the FEL on. My wife told me it looked silly doing this so I decided to see if the 3 minutes mounting / dismounting of the FEL was marketing hype (it isn't). Wasn't thinking and drove the tractor into the garage. The F-ROPS cleared the header but caught the 1X4 trim board that the weather stripping is attached to. The F-ROPS pulled the trim board down intact and just split off a piece of one of the side trim boards. It made a heck of a racket and got the wife running out of the house though. The top section of the F-ROPS got scrapped up pretty bad so I'm repainting it this weekend. The door is all fixed-up and looks better than before with a fresh coat of paint. The standard ROPS being an inch or two shorter would have cleared without a problem.
