Is it possible the heater is defective and the leak is coming thru it and not from around it?

Success!!

This morning I filled the radiator, started the tractor and let it run through breakfast and morning chores. After 20 minutes there was no leak.

It has to have been that the heater just wasn't snugged up against the block wall tight enough as a result of the double wingnut being set wrong. It could have been that the O-ring was damaged in the first hasty 11:30 pm attempt, but I see no visible evidence on the old O-ring of any damage.

The first picture shows the side of the tractor after 20 minutes. You can see evidence of past leaks, but no fresh coolant. The second picture shows the cement under the tractor. Look Ma! No Leak!

Happy you got it working... Was the Rad cap on tight to hold pressure? ;) Did you check it after turning it off? Pressure will come up after shut down.

With above said it would be nice to use a pressure tester if you have or can find one, I would pump it to 1# past what it says on the cap just to double check... You don't want it leaking in the middle of winter.

I recently got a new radiator cap and it was on and tight. I ran it for about 2 hours on Friday and another 2 on Saturday. So far no evidence of a leak.

Before it would start leaking almost immediately after a short warm up. I'm confident that whatever was happening before is not happening now.

Glad to hear you finally resolved that leaking problem :) Sometimes the simplest things turn complicated  Congrats !
