Frozen hydraulics

Thanks lads - it would seem to be a bit of condensation in one of the caps. Once it is warmed up it is no problem ... and yesterday I had to move the THREE FEET of snow we got the day before - let's just say she was plenty warm when I was done! :)

I thought thats what it was. We occasionally have it here in way, way north Idaho. Remember to drill a very tiny hole in the bottom of the cap so any condensation or water will drain. Pack it with some grease and you are good to go.

Best to you.

It has been minus 20 degrees here in the great white north ... and I am finding that my loader joy stick on my 2740 gets hung up (leaves me with no bucket - only able to tip it down not bring it back up?) - it has the newer boom loader that works great (althought I am a bit at a loss for the levelling part?). I have been pouring lock de-icer into the rubber boot to try and thaw it out ... and while it works it seems to take a while. Once the tractor warms up (30 minutes) I can use the loader. Is there any secret to keeping this stick from freezing up?
HI pull the boot back and spray wd 40 into it this worked on my farm trac, witch is the same tractor, i had the same thing happen to me.

Unless you have heaters on the hydraulic reservior, slow hydraulics is a fact of life in very cold weather. I've seen cars with automatic transmissions that wont move at -33F. Same problem. Don't mess with lock de-icer. Start your tractor and let it warm up if you need fast response from your hydraulics. The pump will shear the fluid and warm it up if you let it run for 10-15 minutes or so.

had the same issue fought with it for weeks last year until i removed the caps on the bottom of the valves and cleared the ice out. my thought is water gets arount the loader handle boot and goes to the lowest point. then when it gets cold guess what. so i shot some black rtv around where the shaft goes into the boot. no issues this year with that. the one issue i did have was the loader handle broke off right above the jam nut on the rocker mechanism that controls all of the loader valves. ground it down and rethreaded it. i thinking it will happen again as the metal appeared to be cast of pot metal, very porous in the middle of the shaft. have to see what the dealer says.

this morning it was -25 celcius in eastern Ontario. My 5205 John Deere is in an enclosed unheated garage. The valve that controls the up and down movement of the bucket worked fine but the valve that controls the bucket tilt did not respond. After 30 minutes it started working fine.

Like you, I don't know why one valve would work and the other would freeze. You would think that if one froze, so should the other. Haven't figured out a solution yet but if and when I do, I'll be glad to share it. jp
