I must have gotton moisture in the tilt steering mechanism on the TC40D. The latch will not hold the wheel in place. It moves up and down. I sprayed a little WD40 into the area where it pivots and the latch freed up. However, when I went out to use the tractor last night it was frozen again.

I trust the moisture problem is in the return spring.

Any suggestions?

IF it refroze after the WD40, you might try putting a little anti-freeze around the actuator pin. The WD40 evaporates and/or separates from water because it is oily. The antifreeze should mix with any water and keep it from freezing. ...just a suggestion. I've never had trouble with mine in the much warmer TX weather.

I remember a thread about this before - it was water in the piston top or something like that. The problems existed for people who stored them outside. One solution, besides a tarp, was tipping the seat forward to shelter the steering wheel. I also vaguely recall a service bulletin/retro kit for the older class III steering tilt mechanisms...???

My tractor is always stored inside. I was using if a few weeks ago in a light rain. Now I have the curtis cab on it so there shouldn't by any additional moisture to contend with.

I hope to have my 15,000 btu heater up and running by the end of the weekend so that should help to thaw it if it freezes again. Of course I may still have the problem until the cab warms up.

I spoke with my NH dealer (Olstad Implement in Chatfield, MN) and he says if it acts up again to give him a call. These guys have been great to deal with and I don't doubt they will take care of the problem.

Glad to hear your dealer is very helpful. There was a service bulletin and now is a plastic cover that goes over the top of the shock where the actuator piston is. The cover has been out for quite a while now so your dealer should know what it is. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

techinNY,

Would you know a part number for this piece or the service bulletin #? I just replaced my tilt shock yesterday and while I got it off without removing the steering wheel, I'd sure like to avoid that work again. The lower pin is a real bear.

I haven't forgot about getting the part #, just did not have time the three days I worked last week. I'll try to get it this week.

The part# for the plastic cover is 86401203. This part is listed for all the deluxe compact tractors from the 1530 on up to the TC45D.
