Frt hydrolic post hole digger with 3rd function, vs 3pt post hole digger

I have an HD 3pt PTO one, just got it, replaced an older 3pt one I had. It was half the price of a loader mounted one.

I wanted a loader one for the down pressure and reverse feature, wasn't sure I'd have the hyd to run it and the price tag made the answer easy.

I bought my hyd PHD on a farm equipment auction for 1200 bucks with 2 augers. I've been seeing the recently for as little as 750 bucks with 3 augers. All of them are new. The difference between the two is a no brainer. A 3 PT digger has zero advantages over the hyd version. Fluid flow is a non issue. The auger will just turn slower.

Assuming you have a machine that's actually capable of running either one.

Hydraulic auger advantages:
-Down pressure
-Reverse
-More precise speed control
-Better maneuverability

3 point PTO auger advantages:
-Less expensive

I ended up with 3rd function but opted for 3 pt auger.

I agree with all the comments so far but what was not said is the fact you don't have to look behind you to operate the hydraulic PHD, my neck and back bother me so much that I want everything out front if possible. I hope the one you got works well.

You only have to stick an auger once to convince yourself about the advantage of having reverse on the post hole digger. Hopefully it's not in a set of bed springs....

I used to dream about owning land with the type of dirt where a person could reliably drill fence post holes with a 3pt auger....then I found out that kind of ground was mostly taken up a hundred years ago.

We dig post holes with a backhoe. It's also useful for retrieving stuck post hole augers.

Have a LP post hole digger that just sits now that I have a Shaver post pounder. The one I have will drive a blunt ended rxr tie if necessary.

If someone gives me 100 bucks for it, I'd sell it.
