I had a hard time starting a JD650 one time and was told that the gear shift lever had to be wiggled in the neutral position when starting it. Must have been an issue with the safety switch requiring the transmission to be in neutral for it to start.

One time I was using a small JD--don't recall the model--on which the range selector had to be in neutral.

I have no experience with my own tractor. I bought it shortly after buying farm. Had help at time, tractor did a great job. Help did not...lol. Now i am a fulltime student with hopes of being mostly self sufficient, but can not get it started.

We crawl before we walk, We walk before we run. Everything has a learning curve....Don't get frustrated....one piece at time, for your lofty goal of self sufficiency .

Chill !

Agree with the others here most likely a safety switch somewhere. Possibly the transfer case "N" safety switch or maybe the PTO engagement switch or maybe the seat safety switch on them. Come to think of it there sure are a lot of safety switches to go wrong.

Hello, thanks to all those who replied. I have a 4wd 750 john deere, deisel. It had run for a bit this year but was parked because it hadnt been serviced. Ex never got to it. I have changed oil, new air filter... changed fuel filter...thats when problem occurred. ok bled lines, had air. plugged in for glow plugs, both shifters in neutral. maybe i need to bleed lines again. have run battery down, but even jumping it seems to be a fuel problem. learning as i go. not a deisel girl. give me a welder..i am good- deisel engine...clueless. bought it used with no manual.

Now we are getting somewhere. You changed the fuel filter and then the problem? 'If it ain't broke don't fix it." Sorry couldn't resist. You ran the battery down, does that mean it was turning over but not fireing up? If so next thing is to get a full charge into that battery before it freezes and is junk. When you get your battery charged and double check your fuel filter that it is on tight and full of fuel see if there is a hand pump somewhere in the fuel line for priming up the system after a filter change. If your very VERY careful you can give it a whiff of starting fluid (ether) by spraying it into the air breather while someone has the engine turning over on the starter. That might fire it up long enough to pump the rest of the air out of the injector lines and get you going.

when you change the fuel filter fill the new one with fuel before installing. This will cut down on air in system. Sometimes fuel hammer can be heard with air in system. It sound almost like the engine has damage.
