Fuel, 101 way's to get it

That's about the same set up I have. Except 125 gal and no pallet. Is there a supplier near you that delivers dyed diesel fuel? They could fill excavator and tank. Not s expert, but wouldn't think you'd need a biocide unless it's sitting for a very long time.

:thumbsup:^^^^^ What he said. ^^^^^^ Seems to be the handiest solution for a 12VDC pump. One end on the tractor the other on the pump, so everything is always right there where you need it.

I've seen 300 gallon farm tanks on a stand (gravity fill) with filter, hose, and nozzle for $200-300 on CL. Thinking I might go that way, but first I have to find out what the diesel delivery situation is for where we live. I only want 150 or 200 gallons at a time, if they charge for that size delivery, I might as well put a tank on pallet and go get it myself.

I learned something yesterday and I thought I would share. I was checking withe the state LEO on hauling my fuel in my plastic drum (called the local weigh station). I am fine as long as it is properly secured to the pallet and truck and I have the two stickers. One is the Diesel Fuel Only and the other is the Hasmat (flammable) - both carried by TSC

However per Federal DOT regulations if it is over 1000 LB in fuel weight you need the Hasmat placard or placards on the unit. So using 7.5 lbs per gallon, a tank over 133 gallons in the back of you truck or trailer would need the DOT placard. Might even require a CDL to haul?

What really bothers me is I searched all the Colorado stuff and could not find a simple answer, just links to a lot of statutes. I guess GUBERMENT at its best. :confused3:

That's interesting, but doesn't surprise me either. I could just imagine some yahoo standing a plastic barrel up in there truck unsecured. I could only imagine the carnage when it slid out the back onto the highway. Diesel is like driving on black ice when it hits the pavement.

This thread was quite timely for me. I have 2 5 gallon diesel cans and that was fine for my tractor...but since I just got a large excavator delivered to the land....which has a 65 gallon tank, and after some internet research to calculate my fuel usage, I will probably need a full tank for every 8-10 hour day I put in on it.....I will be working non stop for about 10 days pulling stumps.....and hopefully that will be enough to get me where I need to be for the spring. So....I needed a different fuel setup. After looking over many suggestions I went with a 100 gallon tank from Tractor Supply, and a hand pump. I picked them up today and put them together. I will be mounting the tank to a heavy plastic palate tomorrow. And I will be buying pallet forks for the tractor next weekend so I can take it off the truck eventually. I need to learn about the Biocide mentioned since I will eventually have some fuel sitting around for more than a day or two. I might also want to put a water filter on it. Tank was 349 and the pump was 169. so I'm in it for about 525 plus tax.....shouldn't be paying tax since it is for the farm, but that is another story.

65 gal. tank, wow, that sounds like one big excavator to me and a nice neighbor to let you borrow it. I cant imagine that thing using 50+ gal./day.

Nice tank you have, is it 1 gal. per. 1 in and out stroke on that pump, if my math is close to being right, at 50 gal. that would = 50 inner's and 50 outer's, I might need some help filling it up, on the other hand if I take a lot of coffee breaks, in theory I wouldn't use as much fuel, and where's the water coming from?

Is that on a plastic barrel only? I shouldn't have any issues, my 30/gal barrel is steel and when I get diesel fuel, I'll go around Colorado.

No, for any container or tank carrying diesel if I understood him correctly. I can't put gas in it either - different set of rules on gas. Don't pass up Colorado over $3 in TSC stickers. Other states may actually require them too.

As far as transporting, the 125 gal tank I have that's in a building is actually a square Mobil tank. It's black, came from tsc with mounting bolts. It stressed being sure to bolt it down. The vented cap that came with it keeps enough pressure in it to keep moisture out. If it ever came out at highway speed, besides breaking pump off, I could see fuel going everywhere. Plus a big fine + hazmat clean up bill

The excavator is mine. I stroked that painful check almost 3 weeks ago.im under the gun to get my land cleared in the next month. And will use it for many other things so the math made sense. The pump is rated for 50gallons per 100 strokes. It can also be set for 25 gallons per 100 to make it easier and more controllable. At first I was thinking 12 V but this was cheaper and has less to go wrong. The only issue I can foresee is the dispensing hose is only 8 feet long. I will probably replace it.
Not sure what you mean by where is the water coming from.
