Fuel additives

I've been wondering for years if powerservice lucas or fttp (fuel power or something little white containers claims polar bonding)

i've used powerservice for about 5 yrs the white and recently the grey in my 3 VW idi diesels i noticed it still had carbonization on the injector seats and internaly a little still.. but then after reading chevron's detailed info sheet on fuel additives it denotes IDI diesel's cetane booster and basicly any additive is useless.. i've not seen any difference in fuel economy or anything or noice from any i've ever used except REDLINE's 85+ once i used it at there cleaning dose in the wintertime and it helped when i lived in nashville and the temp dipped realy cold once had hard time cranking added it let it sit for about 20 minutes while shaking the car (my neighbors were like huh?) got in fired up about minute later after it had pumped up to the injector pump.. my only experiance with some product seeming to make difference. The funny thing is there test equipment is a 1.6L vw IDI diesel for emmissions testing in ca.

The funny thing is no additive company will send u hard proof of there testing or claims.. I'd say 90% of it is smoke i do think therez some crappy diesel out there not around where i live but some these truck stops rinky dink.. but i figured it up the other day it's 300 gallon @ 40mpg is 12,000 miles or 1 gallon an hr for the tractor that's 300 hrs.. that's about a year and 3 years respectively for me.. so it's 10 bucks a year or 3 bucks a year.. for something that may or may not help.. but can't hurt if u buy major 3 brands..

Hi...

Like MadDog... I use PRI-G for gas stabilizer... and PRI-D for diesel...

PRI has a website...

I know you guys are going to give me heck for this......

I have never, ever used any kind of fuel treatment/stabilizer/additive in any can of gas or diesel that I have ever owned. And never had a problem of any kind. I buy gas and diesel in 5 gallon quantities, and leave it sitting around all winter every year. I don't run out the fuel in the carb on my push lawn mower, I don't drain the fuel or winterize. Every spring it starts with old fuel and runs like a charm, just like it has for the last 12 years. Chainsaws and weed wackers get a little bottle of oil added to the gallon container of gas, and away they go.

What empirical evidence is there for using these products? My experience seems to indicate that they are required because the manufacturers say they are required.

Dave, in my opinion, you've just been lucky. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Actually, old fuel usually will work, if it isn't contaminated with water or debris. However, if gasoline evaporates from a carburetor sitting unused, it may leave a varnish that may or may not clog it up. That problem is, of course, even more likely with a 2-cycle engine with oil mixed than with straight gasoline in a 4-cycle engine. I've had to overhaul two carburetors on 2-cycle engines from leaving gas in them. On the other hand, I used to have a 2 hp Johnson outboard motor for my canoe and once left it with gas in it for over a year without being started. When I did use it, it started easily and ran just fine, but when I ran that gas out and dumped in a fresh tank, you could tell just from the sound alone that it picked up at least 500 rpm. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

So, I'm not saying you need to use any additives, but sometimes it may be a good idea.

U've been lucky maybe go buy lotto ticket lol.. i've had 2 push mowers and 2 generators get screwed up not draining the gas.. honda and tequemseh (sp?) and a murry with briggs and another tequ. engine..

Therez no debate diesel and gas deteriate over time after about 3-6 months ur gonna get seperation and crap form and u need to run some kinda additive pick ur posion to keep gas fresh and diesel from gathering water and producing algae growth.

As for making a 5 hp brigs gain 10-20 hp and stuff as such like some additives proclaim i doubt it. Alot of company trucks come in at ford place and had bad fuel and algae and all sorts of fuel related issues from sitting around or not in use in winter like some places in sevierville retreat areas wouldn't use truck for 6 months and just to push snow and shuttle guests around in winter would find hard start/no start and issues as such and i'd be diesel where i'd set and some like driver ed cars etc.. seen it too..

I've used PRI-D for four years. Like you I saw the same test results. I'm still using diesel that's four years old. Unfortunately the PRI additives are not widely available.

It was claimed at one time that gasoline that had deteriorated could be salvaged after using PRI-G. Not sure if they still say that.

I am “in line” with ya. If you buy fuel from a good station you do not need it unless it is very cold (i.e. below –10 degrees) in my opinion. The suppliers should add it to the mixture as they are supposed to in winter months. I used it once in my truck during the winter and never say any improvement. Still started the same, same smoke until glows plugs went off (Powerstroke Diesel) and the fuel filters always look fined along with zero moisture. That was from fall 1996 till 2001. Truck still runs perfect as per the new owner (Lexus Head mach). Tried it my old deere (455) and again nothing special. Tried the same thing in my BX and you get the point.

Lucky sure, but after 7-years with no fuel problems, either I am very lucky or the additives are not needed in my “neck of the woods”. I work with a guy that worked for Stanadyne for over 15 years. Even he said sometimes they should be use and other times not.

Bird - I fire up my generator monthly, but not under load??? I thought it was the engine I needed to run and trouble shoot (i.e. make certain it fires up before the "BIG STORM")

KiotiJohn - can you show me a pic of a cut-off valve or give me a website that you use for your generator fuel cut-off? that sounds like an easy fix.

Thanks all for the info

You really need to run it under a load. If I remember right, my Onan manual said at least 50% load, and even more is better. One of my brothers is a factory trained Onan service technician and he, as well as others, have told me the major problem with RV generators is lack of use. And when I was in charge of police communications, we had two monstrous diesel powered Onans that were started early every Sunday morning, then the power to the entire City Hall, police and fire communications, etc. was cut off and everything powered by the generators for an hour.
