Fuel consumption CT450?

   / Fuel consumption CT450? #21
The reason why I asked...Bought my 335 March 31st this year, have 110 hours on it so far...Brush hogging, moving feed, firewood, dirt, cleaning out barns, etc. And the tractor used about 1 gallon/hour under load, after break-in. I bought it new, but was a 2009 model, so it sat on the dealer's lot for 2 years. At about 90 hours, when the tractor runs for about 90 minutes or so "working" like brush hogging, it just flat out dies with no warning. IT is not vapor lock, and the only remedy was to switch to Air, bleed the fuel system for 30 seconds, and then you are good to go for the rest of the day. Outside temps play no factor in this.. happens at 90, happens at 60. Called the dealer, new injection pump was put on the next day, and now I have a completely different tractor. It seems to have about twice the power as before and uses about 1/3 of the fuel it used to, even under full loads "working".But the 90 minute shut down issue is still there. The fuel usage now is more in line and slightly less than the published data supplied, so I am thinking the 2 years on the dealers lot did something within the fuel system.
Sounds like you have suction leak in fuel hose/connection somewhere between tank and the lift pump. Not loose enough to drip fuel but with vibration of engine running it sucks air. Also check the fuel cap, make sure vent in it is not plugged.

On my CT450 for 3 hours moving hay and repairing drive with box blade and fuel needle barely moved.

I'm wondering if this is starting with a full tank.

The fuel guage on my DK35 does not move off the Full mark until after a few hours of work. The first time it happened I thought perhaps the float was stuck. But it registers as expected once the level is down. Perhaps there is an adjustment I should make. It hasn't been a problem so I haven't bothered investigating it yet.

Attached is the engine performance curve for the 3A165 engine.

The SFC is 195g/hp-hr @ 2600

Your peak output of 34 hp @ 2600 would consume 2.1 gph, ironically right about where the OP is averaging with his CT450.

It looks like some of the information I saved from last year's tractor shopping might be useful after all.

man, some of you shop a lot harder than me.

I sit in the seat and play with the levers and drive em around the yard, and if I feel tingling down my leg like Chris Mathews did over Obama then I buy em

Yeah, I crawl all over them and check everything out. I was very curious about how the HSTs were constucted and how they worked, curious about the Korean diesels, curious about how accessible everything would be for servicing, etc........ I like to know as much about what I am buying as possible before making the purchase. With a running average of ten years between tractor purchases it pays to be thourough.

Well over the weekend I put about 14 hours on my machine. This time i went through a tank in about 14hours. That's alot of stop go and off and on the throttle.

The Daedong 4B243 has a published SFC (specific fuel consumption) of 192 g/hp-hr @ 2600 rpm.

That equates to 3.04 gal per hour when producing 50 hp @ 2600.

A consumption of 2 gallons per hour would represent an average engine output of 33 hp @ 2600 rpm.

Milkman,

So if I read this right, bush-hogging (or after today stump grinding) where I an supposed to crank the engine to 2600 is burning 3.04 gallons per hour! There is only 11 gallon capacity to the tank. That seems like not so efficient to me (or am I reading this wrong:confused2:).

I have about 1/4 tank left on the first tank since I got mine and I've gotten at least 7 hours thus far, but only a couple of hours bush-hogging. Mostly I've been running the grapple at between 1900 and 2000 rpm.

Am I doing something wrong?

I just got two 5 gallon diesel cans, I best go fill them ASAP...

Thanks,

David

The manual also has data for the DK40/45/50 which I did not include because of this site's 1 MB limit for .pdf's. Let me know if it is required and I can scan the pages.

Cheers

KCO,

Can you post of PM me the link so I can download those files that cover the DK50se.

Thanks in advance sir.

Dave,

Take a look at the attachment from the University of Nebraska. The "Varying Power and Fuel Consumption" tests are done at rated engine speed with a varied load on the pto/engine. The fuel consumption ranged from 1.2 gal per hour up to 2.9 gal per hour as the pto load increased from minimal to maximum.

Fuel burn rate corelates with the load that the engine is sustaining. As the load increases, the engine requires more fuel burn in each ignition cylce to develop the torque needed to maintain its speed. Your actual fuel consumption will fall somewhere in between the 1.2 and 2.9. It depends on the average load that you and the implements are demanding from the engine.
