Junk I'm all for electronic contraptions and I'm sure your sonar water detecting probe works quite nicely but there is a much simpler way.

Years ago when working with my families service stations I used a product called Kolor Kut. The product is similar in consistency to tooth paste and you merely smear a very small amount of it on the very bottom inch of a thin flexible piece of wood and then stick your oil tank from the fill bung. If you have water the paste will turn from brown to red and also indicate how deep the water accumulation is in the tank. It's then a simple matter to open the ball valve at the bottom of your tank to eradicate the water. You did install that ball valve at the bottom of your oil tank didn't you Junk? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Kolor Kut is about 5 bucks a tube and lasts years since you only use a small dab each time you stick your tank.

Many years ago we had oil tanks at barns for burners. Had one we always had a problem with water getting in. It seemed that every time we needed to remove the water we were at a point we couldn't or shouldn't shut down the burners. So I got a vacuum cleaner that you could take the hose off and plug in to the exhaust side. I would lower a 1/2" hose to the bottom of the tank on the low end. Then raise that hose just off the bottom and put the other end in a container. Then I'd use that vacuum cleaner to pressurize the tank a little and bring the water out fast. Once I saw oil I'd stop. Worked like a charm.

I've transfered diesel fuel like that too. But used a 1" hose to make it faster.

That reminds me of a car club that many years ago would take old vacuum cleaners and have each one suck up some gasoline and then let it run until it blew up. They did this for a yearly car show event until one day someone realized that it could be dangerous and someone could get hurt.

PineRidge, Junkman and all that replied, thank you, you've put me on the road to clean fuel. I will incorporate the suggestions for the dip tube and the nozzle. I don't plan on putting a drain in the bottom, I'll just manhandle it once a year. PineRidge thanks for the TSC heads-up, that's exactly what I was looking for.
