Here in the northeast we change a fuel filter every winter season weather it needs it or not.

Actually the owners manual says the fuel filter should be changed yearly or as needed. Guess I waited till the as needed. From now on I will change it yearly when doing my oil change.

Once you have added the diesel anti gelling additive and have the fuel back to a liquid, you can use it. Provided that there was no water in the fuel and the gelling was just from the cold temps. As mentioned, I buy from a place that sells a lot of fuel and has a good turn over. Also, I add the additive all the time just in case. It's not that expensive to buy and cheap insurance from what happened to you.

It also depends on where the distributor gets their fuel from If it is out of Canada it most likely will be treated sufficiently. If the fuel is from the south americas it will be treated less. I use Howes.........problem free

Drew is correct Cdn diesel fuel is much lighter to accomodate our winters. That is good and bad - lighter fuel means less power. In the US it is my understanding that the fuel companies change less often so they have many more problems with diesels.

As the tempurature drops the parafins gel and have problem getting through the filters - it is not uncommon to total stop flowing. Truckers always keep extra filters with them but this is normally a short term fix.

The only solutions is the antigel fuel conditioner or a lighter fuel. Unfortunately the lighter fuel will not mix without significant shaking. The antigel is suppose to mix by itself.

We have used Power Service in our area. I have always been very impressed with the line up of products. Usually available at truck stops.

Make sure you use up your summer diesel before fall. Talk to the fuel guys to find our if the winter diesel is available before your next fill. In spring make sure you get back to the summer diesel - you will like notice the less power with your spring and summer work.
