I have a 70 Chevelle with a mildly modified small block. All the rings and piston are new. I've noticed lately the car gets a lot of fuel in the oil. Why is that? I've looked over everything to no avail. I built the motor and know everything that was done. We also have a late 60s model Ford pumper at our fire dept that does the same. I know gas is thinner than oil so maybe it makes its way down the cylinder walls and thru the ring grooves. Anyway to stop this?

Sounds like the float bowls are emptying into the intake tract? Maybe the floats are set too high or the needle valve defective?

Probably not occuring while running, maybe just while sitting?

Watch out, because that gas can ignite in the crank and blow out the sidewalls..... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

If you still have a mechanical fuel pump on it, sounds to me like you may need to replace it. It may have a ruptured diaphragm which will leak fuel into the block.

Sounds like it's time for a carb .rebuild or adjustment at the float .(needle & seat)

I'm with Carl. Check the fuel pump.

The fuel pump is brand new and pumps fine. I have checked it. Sky Pup and I are on the same page...I DO NOT want a crankcase explosion but do not want to be changing the oil every week either. I'm not sure how much fuel is getting in. When I pull the dipstick, it can be easily seen. I'll wipe it clean and recheck and none. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I'm going to install a fuel shutoff valve under the hood and change the oil. When I'm done with the car, I usually disconnect the battery anyway, so I'll reach over and turn the fuel off too and see if it corrects the problem.

Even new stuff can be defective. However, if you feel that the problem could be from a carb/float, pull a few plugs and see if they are wet or have a strong odor of gasoline. I don't remember if you stated what make of carb you have, but if it's a Holley, they like gasoline. I always like the sound of a Rochester Quadrajet /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

It has a 600 cfm Edelbrock carb.

David,
My first reaction is, you have a carburator.... Its normal, junk it and get fuel injection.... But I know thats not what you want to hear..Sorry, thats just me....

To actually help you... I would also recomend checking the float levels.. More than likely the float level is off or maybe you have trash in the needle/seat.. Like was also mentioned, the plugs can tell you allot.. Does it run rich?(wet plugs) if so, I'd overhaul the carb.. If not, the pump is a good suggestion.. If you were to remove the pump from the engine, I believe, you can plug one fitting and apply vaccuum to the other and monitor for a leak. It shouldnt leak..

Hope this helps, though its just an agreement with the others..
