Actually yes, smoke comes from the solenoid if I give it too many cranks
Then you probably have a bad solenoid or a loose connection on one of the large posts of the solenoid.
When the starter is energized, the poor connection heats up and you lose the connection until it cools. Eventually, it won't connect until you tighten it or replace the solenoid or starter.
