While spreading some gravel yesterday with my JD655 she started sputtering and spitten and then stalled. So, a long story short, it was out of fuel. Bled the lines, ran pump unhooked from sediment bowl, blew air up line to tank before I found the problem.......my fuel gauge showed about 3/8ths full. First time this happened. Do I need a new sender? Fuel gauge goes done to zero when key off and back to 3/8 when on. Or do I just fill it up when it shows half a tank, which now means empty. Heck, I wasted a cup of fuel trying to bleed empty lines and the stuff is like liquid gold nowdays!

Before going to all the trouble of switching sending units OR gauges, check the ground from sending unit to frame. That's the #1 problem with fuels gauges. Also check to see if you have 12 V to the gauge. After that, sending unit is next most likely. (Had the ground problem crop up 2 times on my 2440 Deere)

OK, thanks. I'll do just that tomorrow. I was hoping to hear from someone that had an experience I could learn from and find an easy fix.

If all else fails, you can always do what I do, every time before starting my JD for the day, I use a wooden dowel to check the fuel amount. This gives me a rough estimate of the time I have before adding gas. My JD is a 1965 and I have an engine that I am eventually going to replace the existing one with so am waiting for the tear down before changing out the fuel gage system.
