His barn is the place the initial thefts took place. The mid portion of the barn is the only part with a lockable door. And that section is full of his tractors, jeeps and a huge pile of cotton seed. Anyway, its kind of funny, he has several smaller barns, a big butler building/shop, several pole buildings and lean-tos, all stuffed with tractors, jeeps and trucks. So, no room for mine.

I have no idea how many tractors he has but he has at least 4 big Cases and 3 bigger JDs. There's at least one 8N, a Massey of some sort and two smaller JDs. And a huge articulated wheel loader. All old. And look it. So he probably doesn't have to worry about his tractors getting stolen. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You could pull the wire off of the fuel shut off selenoid. This would not let the engine start

Dunno bout your 'L', but the BX brochure says "self-priming fuel system". Even if there is air in there, it's gonna get push out by the fuel.

I have seen switches used to good effect three ways (on cars and trucks):

1. Battery (but that is a BIG switch). Sparky

2. Fuel pump (simplest IMO).

3. On a normally-closed shut-off solenoid.

Or you could just hook-up 110V hot lead through a christmas light blinker to your tractor frame (ground the neutral nearby). Gives 'em a second or two to let go /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

In Texas you are specifically allowed to use deadly force if somebody is stealing a vehicle or farm equipment.

Unless they just chain off onto the front axle and drag it up onto a flatbed. I've head that's what they're doing in the NE. I guess there's not much you can do about that. **** theives!

Yes, I've come to the conclusion that if they really want it, there's not much you can do to stop them.

In regard to deadly force, I'm not sure about the law here is SC but it tends to fall on the side of the property owner. If the property owner feels threatened in any way he can use deadly force. But where I am located, deadly force would be the initial response from most landowners/farmers regardless about what the law says about it the next day. And I'm pretty sure the theives are aware of their risk. which makes things all the more scary.

However, the chances of them getting caught at 3am on a long dark country road is pretty slim. I guess good insurance is the best defense.

At least if ya GOTTA kill 'em you'll still have the equipment to bury a couple of bodies. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I've thought that hiding a battery powered electric fence unit under the hood to energize the whole tractor might work? Would need a hidden switch to shut it off.

N80,
Here is a picture with three different versions of the battery cut off.

Thanks Jerry, that helps. I think I'll look into that.

George-
I looked at Jerry's switches - Very good idea. The top one has a removable key, all the keys are the same, is probably the best and is the most expensive. The center switch has a knob held on with a small screw. If you use this one, remove the screw and knob - you only need to slide the knob on to open/close the circuit. Both switches need to be on all the time the engine is running.

If you are still concerned, after you shut off the fuel tank, get a rag to keep the area dry, disconnect the fuel line after the shutoff, insert a metal rod/stud the same diameter as the I.D. of the hose, and re-connect the hose. This will prevent the necessary fuel from reaching the engine. More work, messy, but secure.
